    Replacing glass on Tachometer?

    I have two good tachs... Unfortunately one has broken glass. Is there anyway to (without destroying the other tach) to separate the glass portion from the rest of the tach body?

    i've seen a thread here where it's shown how to make a clean cut in the body to separate the top and how to put it all back together nicely
    might be in the tips and tricks session

      Two methods

      There are at least two schools of thought.

      1.) use a dremeal tool and cut off the front 1/2 of the gauge.

      2.) prise off the front besel mounting ring.

      This forum contains old posts which may have information which may be useful. It is a closed forum in that you can not post here any longer. Please post your questions in the other technical forums.


      Personally my choice is the prising method(i took 15 minutes max). You should have no problems with back lighting after prising and it is relatively simple with only minimal damage to the ring. While cutting does no damage to teh ring it is much more invasive into the gauge it self.

      Take your pick.

            Having just gotten the glass off a Tach and speedo for a cleaning and repaint of redline and having done about 4 others, I use the prying method, I use a small 1/8th inch straight slot screw driver and pry the crimped over edge about 3/4 of the way around the tach or speedo up so I can get the glass off, sometimes its a little hard to get it started but be slow and methodical and it will happed, I leave an edge of crimped ring still there as a start to help reassembly, When I put the glass back on I slowly recrimp with a medium channel lock plier,as you can recrimp with a straight on angle and not leave teeth marks go slow and work your way around a few times till its fully recrimped, This method I think is much better than cutting the speedo/tach apart as GS's are not the smoothest engines around and once plastic is cut you never have original strength, and water proof-ness is maintained.
