Tach cable leaking?

    Tach cable leaking?

    On the GS the valve covers front area, where the tach connects is completely dirty. I think it is oil mixed with a lot of dirt. Would this be a for sure sign of the O-ring going bad? Or could it be something else. I am sure that is what it is from reading other posts, but I want to be completely sure. I have never seen oil spilling out of that area, but it definitely is the dirties part of the bike and seems like all the other dirty oily spots on the bike come from there as well.

    Mr. bwringer has an excellent "how to" that explains tach cable seal replacement. See it here.

    I've replaced my tach cable seal. I think this is something most GS riders must do now and then. I don't know if any part numbers will be different. Be sure to check. Have fun!

        I found the how to on the replace, I am just wondering if that is what I need to do. I guess the best way to find out is to take that puppy apart and see what it looks like in there. If it is bad replace it, if it looks fantastic and only fantastic leave it. Right?

          Clean it up

          Mr. KRISTI'SGS550,

          If you've got brown, crusty, drippy messes on your middle pipes and a wet, weepy ooze on the top front of your motor, then I would strongly suspect the tach cable seals. Parts are not expensive and it's only a half hour job. The best way to tell is to clean it all up really well and then use some spray powder around the area to pinpoint any leaks.

            It's not really a wet mess. It is more of a caked on dried grease and dirt in the general area. Also it is very hard to clean I have been poking at it for a few days now with some degreaser, SOS pads, and everything else I can think of. Very caked on and dried stuff.

                  When your tach cable seal drips on your pipes, it will dry quickly but it will still look like brown drips. Just curious.

                    I don't really see anything dripped onto the pipes. The grum is moslty in the front part of the valve cover and up over the top of it as well. Almost like something has been leaking and throwing the oil back onto the bike as it goes down the road. I got a valve cover gasket because that's what I thought was bad at first (which it was), but figured since the bike is apart I would change and fix all I could now.

                      good call !

                      my bike had a slight leak between the crankcases - so i rebuilt the whole damn thing :-D all the gaskets, rings, valves, seals...

                        I agree with Mr. psyguy. As long as you're in the neighborhood, the tach cable seal is a quick, easy, cheap fix. Then you won't have to worry about it for a long time.

                            Psyguy is right. Anytime I get into something I look for soemthing else along the way I can replace. If you're going to be in there anyway....
