    1980 GS750 - Carb Removal - Is there a trick?

Hello, I Know this question has been asked 1000 times before, and i've searched for the answer, however i still can't get my carbs to come out. I just want to be sure i'm doing it right -

    1) Pull seat, tank, and battery (left box in)
    2) Loosen all clamps connecting carbs to airbox and front boots as well as boot to engine intake clamp
    3) Take bolts out holding airbox in place
    4) move airbox back as much as possble (about 1/2 in my case) and wiggle the carbs out...

The problem I am having is no matter how much i wiggle the carbs, i don't have enough clearence between the carbs and the airbox to allow the carbs to slip off the front boots.. Is there any trick to this? I've thought about resorting to cutting the boots and replacing them, but i don't want to do this as they seem to be in ok shape. Will using any lubricants on the front boot help get it to come loose? Thanks in advance.

A shot of WD-40 on the boots in front can't hurt. The rest is just mussel. Pull them back and then up. The band clamps might have to be opened up all the way to give room.

    Good luck.
    Ed

The up was what i was missing. after reading the post and tilting them up diagonally i finally got them out. Time to let all the gas drain and let them air out before cleaning them (otherwise the wife will get upset because of the gas smell)

Yeah we all have to put up with that. Cheers. You thought they were hard getting out. Wait till you have to put them back in again. Ask Chef why he has pods.

I hope I didn't make it too much longer, I just couldn't resist...
Go have a beer and take the rest of the day off, tell them I said it was OK.

yea, i'm giving thought to going to seperate filters, but i'm curious what effect that would have on a/f mixtures. I would assume going to seperate filters would cause the engine to run lean, and that's bad. To the others out there running seperates - did you have to do anything to your carbs settings to get the a/f mix right? maybe richen it up a bit or did you have to change jets? thanks.

"HEY STATE MANAGER, Tkent02 said it was OK to take the rest of the day off". Mind you that is not much of an early mark as it is already Wednesday afternoon here.

                      1980 GS750 carbs

I've told this story before: I asked two old, independent motorcycle mechanics with their own shop what the trick was to getting the carbs off and on.....they smiled at each other and one of them said..."there isn't one!".

Take Thursday off too in that case. Not much point in coming in just for one day on Friday either. The state manager is a good friend of mine, he owes me a few favors anyway.
                        You're good to go.
