      OK. My rubbers are black.
What kind of gasket kit is that?

Thanks DOCTORNICK good picture. Can you tell me does the head hasket go on first and then the orange rings on top or the other way round.

        Cheers

          GS1000 Head gasket

They are copper rings - integral with the gasket (assuming Vesrah). I have read in this thread that the 4 thin rubber backed steel "seal washers" are placed inside the copper rings as previosly suggested in this thread. When mine goes back together i intend to do this. Still waiting for a new head gasket so cannot post a picture, but i think everyone by now knows what we are on about. I asked the supplier to clarify the correct location and purpose of the seal washers, but no reply from them. I can only assume that the seal washers are a backup precaution as there may have been some issues with oil leaks without them in place. Just my assumption based on what i have read so far in this thread. Shame that Vesrah cant put a note with the kit to this effect for novices like me.

damn, this is getting confusing... my set i think had black RUBBER only rings/seals :? (no metal backing) and they were too big to nicely fit them INSIDE the gasket - and the gasket itself had copper ring inserts but not as wide as those pictured

so, if your rings fit nicely with the gasket / copper rings then definitely use them

The rubber ones go with the gasket, MAYBE.

The copper washers go under the crown nuts on TOP OF THE HEAD! Don't put them under the gasket.

the orange rings are not o-rings; they are very thin metal washers sealed in rubber. This is a vesrah complete gasket set I bought from ebay.
to assemble, I put the dowel pins in first then put the head gasket on. Then I put the orange rings on and last I put the rectangle o-ring in the middle.
I took them back off after and coated everything in a light coat of threebond 1211. I don't know if that is necessary, but I did it.
Sorry if this generated more questions than it answered.

i'm not saying anything more unless i can see a close up of the parts in question as i may have added confusion rather than clarity 8-[
very sorry if this was the case - my gasket kit was obviously different

Vesrah head gasket photo attached - i hope

                    Hi Folks,

My Vesrah head gasket arrived finally. Here's a picture - the copper sealing rings which are molded into the gasket are 20mm internal diameter. The separate thin metal/rubber sealing washers are 20mm outside diameter and 13mm i.d. and are 2mm thick.

The oil gallery hole is about 12mm diameter, so the washer will not restrict oil flow up the stud hole.

Incidenatlly the head gasket, which i bought as an individual part, did not include the 4 sealing washers-these i already had from previously buying the complete kit. I can only guess that these washers are a secondary sealing device to reduce leakage opportunities? Stuffed if i can see where else on the engine they would be used - and their size is perfect for the application. The head gasket thickness is 1.5mm (unused obviously).

The other question i had regarding which way up to put the gasket at the start of this thread - i neednt have worried coz there is very little difference in terms of the cylinder metal ring width.

Hope this helps to clarify - i know there are at least 2 other recent threads where this has been questioned.

If i am wrong re the sealing washers assumption, please let me know!!

                    many thanks.

                      aaauhhh, heck. I don't know.

I don't have the rubber bits in. It didn't look like they were suppased to go there. I didn't put them in. I'm going to run it without them. If it leaks, I'll order another gasket and put them in.

obviously, the rubber rings fit nicely as in your picture (wasn't the case with the kit i got), so i'd go ahed and use them like that
                        good luck

btw, metal rings' wider rims face upward, i think

No, wider on the cylinders, slimmer on the head.
