Pingel petcock on a '80 GS1100E??

    Pingel petcock on a '80 GS1100E??

    Long ago, I put a Pingel on my '80 GS750L. It was a very close fit but it works great. I'd like to put one on my '80 GS1100E but I'm pretty sure it won't fit. Has anyone done it??

    Also, if anyone can tell me about the wire colors and hook-up for the electrolyte sensor, I'd really appreciate it. (The guy who had it before me, altered it and I can't figure out why.)

    You have that slotted petcock?

        Yeah, I've got them on my '80 GS1100ET and '80GS1000G. Worked great. 6211CH with either 1902C or 1702C adapter. Measure the mounting holes, center to center. If it's 50mm then you need 1902C. If they're 44mm, you'll need 1702C adapter. The center is 3/8" NPT.

          Thanks a lot, Don! I'm very familiar with the installation but, man, it's going to be tight!!!! I've compared the space on both the 750 and the 1100. It was a really close fit on the 750....and it looks like there's even less space on the 1100.8-[

          (I'm pretty sure all of the 1980 models have a 50mm spread.)

          By the way, Don, can you please tell me about the wiring set-up for the battery sensor???

            I should have also added that I don't use the stock air box. I run with K&N pod filters so that allows me a lot more room under the tank. I'm sorry but I don't know how well the Pingel will fit with the stock box. Considering that you can mount it with the gas fitting at a variety of angles, you should be able to figure out what would work best with your setup. Call the guys at Pingel and talk to them about it. They were very helpful when I spoke with them. www.pingelonline.com

            The wiring diagram I have doesn't show the battery sensor as a separate circuit. I never bothered with it so I don't know exactly how it's connected up. I assume it's got a hot line that runs through a fuse and then back to the check panel but that's just a guess.

              I think that explains it....it's the air box that's the problem. I looked again and I'm almost certain it won't fit with the stock set-up because no matter how you set up the petcock, it still has to be straight up and down and the problem is the distance between the underside of the tank and the top of the air box. Thanks for your help and the info. about the sensor!:-D

                if you get a little creative with the tank you can squeeze the valve in there without too much trouble.. it is a very tight fit though.

                I suppose it is small inconvience for us stock airbox folks to deal with to get the benifit of the nice pingel =) ... somtimes I do miss the vacum one but only a little

                  Pingel does offer a vacuum option fuel valve now and I think it's the same price. I haven't looked at the prices recently. I don't mind not having a vacuum controlled petcock. I was just so relieved at not having to fight the OEM valve any more. The Pingel lever moves effortlessly. I know there's a lot of guys that stand by the "stay with the stock air box" belief but I've also never regretted switching over to pods. I HATED having to deal with the stock air box every time I needed to take the carbs off and I also think the pods look better. The carb adjustment can turn into a total and complete nightmare which can require a HUGE amount of patience on your end but once you get the hang of it, it's not so bad. I've also ridden in pretty heavy rain with the pods and didn't have any problems with it. If you switch to pods, don't drill the slide lift holes unless you're out of options. Check out www.factorypro.com and www.sudco.com and go from there.

                    Thanks, Scott. I figured I could slightly elevate the rear of the tank if I had to and, from what you say, it would probably be necessary. I kind of hate having to do that but I'm old-fashioned and really would like to have a reserve.

                      I replaced my OEM petcock on my 80 GS1100E with:

                      6211-CH Power-Flo Single Outlet Reserve Valve - Hex Design - 3/8" NPT
                      A1902C 3/8" NPT 1.968 or 50mm

                      It's a tight fit between the pingel and the stock airbox, but it does, in fact, clear.

                      I did have to file out the tank hole for the fuel mast a smidge to get the pingle in, though.

                            The trick I used with mine and keeping the stock airbox was to as said slightly increase the rear of the tank just tweak the rubber gasket the bolt goes between and loosen up the airbox bolts which should give you the play you need to get it in.. on my 750 (I based my pingel decision off you earlier heh..) The chrome cover screw on the airbox is where my squeeze happened but leaving the play in the airbox a touch you can freely move the valve lever up and over the screw ... it can be a trip to get to reserve in a pinch but I tend not to run down that low anyway and keep a close eye on my mileage. Though I have forgotten to turn it off a time or two *snickers* my bad...

                            Before someone cautions me about testing my reserve... I run it set to reserve every other tank so the guy does not get clogged when I really need it.

                            Since I am moving the pingel to my newly painted tank I will make sure to give it a good cleaning too. Pingel customer service were happy to send me out a new gasket for free to boot when I asked for the part information to order another.
