Carb rebuild - One down, three to go!

Finished rebuilding my first carb ever last night (pats himself on the back). Went by the GS Resources manual step by step. It was so mucked up inside, it's a wonder it ran at all. Soaked in Berryman's for two days. Working on #2 right now. At this rate, I'll be done this time next year! LOL What can I say, I have two little ones at home.

I've started on my first one. Mine are VMs. I am having to use carb spray though as we can't get carb dip here in Oz. Have asked at various auto parts shops, but they don't carry it and cannot get it in either. Thought I might try boiling a few parts in undiluted white vinegar to see what happens.

Hey Don! Good luck with yours. Too bad about the unavailability of carb dip there in Oz. I'm sure with enough carb cleaner you should be fine. I've never tried the white vinegar. I'd be interested in how yours does if you try it. Keep us posted! :-D

I'm right there with you. Started rebuilding mine this weekend too. Got the first one stripped on Saturday and let it sit in the dip overnight. Reassembled on Sunday and got the #2 stripped and is sitting in the dip as we speak! My results look similar. And I agree. I pulled the needle jet and said wow, I can't beleive this thing ran at all! I can't wait to get them all sorted and start riding to see the difference! Good luck with the rest of your rebuild.

Hey John! Thanks and good luck to you also. Did you have any trouble getting your pilot jets out so far? I've had a real hard time with my first two. Hoping to get the other two out sucessfully! Keep me posted on yours. - Chuck

Yeah, I posted in your "do you feel lucky" thread. I ended up buggering the pilot on the #1 carb and drilling/using a bolt extractor getting it out :shock:. But the pilot on the #2 came out without trouble. I was thinking about using heat on the carb as Nessism suggested, but was a little too impatient i think...8-[

i had a hell of a time getting my pilots out of mine but i have a poker that i just barely tapped into the jet and pulled it out since i was just putting new jets in anyways

Sounds like you have it figured out. I didn't know it was going to be some sort of rite of passage just getting the pilots out of these things. Does anybody know why the pilots are down in there about an inch in the hole to begin with? Got to qualify as cruel and unusual punishment or something. Can't even see the head without a flashlight! What's the point of that anyway besides making me say things I shouldn't be saying? :-D

Are you planning on replacing the screws on the top of the carbs? They seem pretty rusted to me. This may cause you problems in the future.
