You need to order the tank sealer kit, not just a can of POR-15, AFAIK. The stuff in the kit is different, plus it has the right acid and base to get the rust out. The kit had enough sealer to do my 550 tank, so I think it will be enough for your 850 tank, which has a more uniform shape and probably similar surface area.

i have already gotten the rust out using evaporust. so i just need the sealer not the whole kit with the rust remover and everything

i used kbs coatings and i used the small one. it worked on my 5 gallon tank and there was some left over so it might be good. the can is 8 ounces big.

Por-15 claims their small can is enough sealer to do a 5 gallon tank. While I believe this, getting the sealer to hit every square inch of the tank before it goes off and hardens is the challenge. The outside surface area of the tank is easy since you can rotate the tank and flow the sealer around, but the upside down U-section area of the tank that straddles the frame backbone is another story. You can’t flow the sealer over this area very easily. For that reason I’d go for two cans of sealer and just pour off the excess after you are sure you have hit all the inside areas. It will cost a little more money but at least you can be sure to do a complete job.Ed

I've used POR and it is good stuff but, as mentioned, there is just enough in the kit to do one tank if you can manage to spread it well around. Its kind of hard to do as the stuff is fairly thick and doesn't run that easily. It also requires very good tank prep for it to stick properly and lots of folks complain that it peels after a season or so.
I did the GS tank last year with the Phenol Novalac tank kit from www.caswellplating.com. The kit is good for 2 tanks and I think costs the same as POR or Kreeme. The other good think about this product is that it id designed to cover rough rusty surfaces. Just knock off the big rust flakes and apply the stuff. It is quite liquid so spreads well but be warned that it sets up quite quickly (10 to 20 minutes depending on temperature and humidity).
Don't do what I did and use the whole can as more is not always better. I thought it would build up a good shell but some pooled in one side of the tank making it impossible for me to put my sender unit back in.
I'll be using this stuff from now on. Great product IMHO.
Good luck with the project.
Cheers,
Spyug.

I've used both POR and the Caswellplating epoxy (at Spyug's suggestion ). My experience is slightly different than Spyug's in that I found the POR stuff to be very thin and runny and the Caswell epoxy very thick. I used the entire quart of the epoxy and poured off the excess - not that much came back out. The tank wound up with a very thick coating on the inside which added a fair bit of weight. So far so good.Ed
