    axle problems

HELLO ,,AGAIN FROM ALABAMA. STILL KNOCKIN ALONG ON MY 78 GS 550E. I'M DIGGIN FOR INFO AGAIN.SEEMS I HAVE A WARPED FRONT AXLE. I'VE LOOKED AT IT A HUNDRED DIFFRENT WAYS AND ,,TO ME IT'S A WARPED AXLE.I WONDER WHAT OTHER BIKES HAVE THE SAME AXLE AS MINE.AND IF I CAN BUY THIS NEW,TO INSURE I GET A STRAIGHT ONE . IT'S A 1978 GS 550E. I BOUGHT ANOTHER USED WHEEL AND TIRE OFF EBAY AND I GET THE SAME EXACT WOBBLE,,,SIDEWAYS ABOUT 1/8" AND UP AND DOWN 1/8" FOR ABOUT A HALF A ROUND, NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES I TAKE THE WHEEL OFF AND REPOSITION ALL THE PARTS. I PUT NEW WHEEL BEARINGS IN THE OLD WHEEL AND GOT THE SAME EFFECT. THIS IS WITH THE BIKE JACKED UP IN THE FRONT SPINNING THE WHEEL. THE FORKS MEASURE THE SAME IN THIS POSITION.I GUESS MY NEXT MOVE IS TO TRY ANOTHER AXLE. CAN ANYBODY HELP ME IN THIS AREA? IT WAS 70 DEGREES HERE TODAY, I SURE AM GETTING GIMPY ABOUT GETTING THIS BIKE ROAD READY! THANKS IN ADVANCE...........OLJO FROM ALABAM

Used axles are cheap, as are new keyboards.
    Bye Bye!

Find a machinists surface plate or good solid flat table (butchers block or similar), and with the flared end of the axle hanging off the edge of the plate, roll the axle. You will see very quickly if the axle is bent.

I'd stay with same bike. Ebay typically has tons of 550 parts. http://motors.shop.ebay.com/_Motorcy...fxdZ1QQ_ptasZ1

You could also cross-reference the part numbers on other models using the parts fishe at Alpha Sport or similar.

A new axle should be around $20 - $25, if you don't want to fart around with eBay.

Front axle is $29.81 from Bike Bandit. Not too bad. Of course, I'd check the one you have for straightness first.
