Which Is The Master Carb On The Gs550b
Hi. Can anyone tell me which is the master carb for doing the bench synch on the 22mm Mikuni VM carbs for the 1977 model GS550B model. I have read somewhere that the master carb is the one that has no adjustment on it. But all my carbs seem to have adjustment on them where they bolt to the throttle shaft in the top of each carb. Or am I looking at the wrong spot.Tags: None

For the bikes with CV carbs that do have a 'master' carb, it's always the one with the throttle cable attached to it.
Tkent is right, your VM carbs are individually set off the same shaft. 8-[

Why does the crossover affect this? Pondering.....
I always thought it was to keep the center two cylinders from getting hotter at idle.

Generally the #3 carb is the base. Back the idle adj screw out until it is not contacting the stop. MAKE sure the #3 carb slide is closed!!! If not adjust until closed. Then adj Idle screw until a 1/16 drill bit will just slide under the slide opening, intake side. Then adjust the other carbs to the 1/16 drill. SHould give you a very good base line

Thanks for all your replies. A lot of good info, especially from the regulars. I have cleaned the carbs and am about to install "O" rings and reassemble them. I did not disturb the threaded adjustment and locknut on the top of the carbs, so I will see what they are like and how close the slides are to each other when I get all the throttle shaft linkage bolts back in place (5 in all).
Thanks again. Cheers. Don
