when I reinstall the cams how do I tell what the timing marks are on the cams and flywheel?Tags: None

You have to look in your shop manual. The manuals are ultra-clear on this subject since it is vitally important.

Even if someone posts the procedure, I would never trust my engine to the accuracy of someone else's research and typing.
I don't know if there's anyplace where you can download the manual or the timing pages.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

Regarding cam timming, the archives here actually have plenty of good information on this subject, some of it posted by me. I agree with Brian though in a general sense, there is no subsitute for a good manual.

I agree with the previous posters, but will give some general info. There are timing marks on the right end of the crank that are used for determining TDC and ignition timing. There are also marks on the cams. The manual tells how to line them up and how many links of cam chain should be between the marks on the intake and exhaust cams. Again, specifics can not be given, as the numbers might change. For example, chain-drive 650s have 19 links between the cam marks, shaft-drive 650s have 20.
