Was fine, new battery, now blows fuses.

Not a GS, (Or even Suzuki).
This is an email I just got from my friend in Edmonton.

"So I had to get a new battery. I charged my new battery. I put it in my bike. A fuse blew. I bought new fuse. Put new fuse in my bike. Hooked up old battery. Battery too low to start. Put in new battery. New fuse blew.

What have I done!?!?"

It's an 82 (?) Honda Cb750. Running good when parked, just dusted off for the season. His battery was dead because he didn't tend it.

I responded with this:

"Sounds simple. Don’t tear apart the harness just yet.

Make sure you’re hooking up the battery right. (I know, I know. Just start with the simplest things.)

Test the battery with a multimeter. How many volts? Amps? (dc)

Check the cables. Positive to starter? No cracks? Negative to engine casing? Cracks? Good contacts?

Right size fuse? Which fuse? Main?

What position is the key in when the fuse blows? Lights on?

Very likely I’d say it’s a bad ground somewhere. I’ll post it on the forum."

Hi Mr. BillyBoy,

Is the fuse properly rated? It's a good call to check all the grounds and clean all connections. Maybe r/r is toast? Starter is stuck?

He went home and checked. Hooked up the battery wrong.
