Ok Don, I'm gonna do the relay-coil thingy tomorrow and get the new plugs.
What's got me stumped is that 3 cyl's quit firing at once. 3 plugs going out at once seems like a stretch. I'm thinking something happened in the igniter.
Sanjiv (above) mentioned getting a dyna set-up instead. Will a dyna ignition kit replace the ignitor? What other components are replaced? Easy to install?

Dyna ignition replaces the ignitor. Dyna S version is the cheapest type, about $120 from Z1 Enterprises. If you feel like gambling, used ignitors typically sell on ebay for less. Check the connections in your harness first though, it's very common for some corrosion to set in with age.
Good luck.Ed

thanks again Ness. I think I'll get a Dyna set up soon, I really don't want to deal with this problem again.

The Dyna replaces the crankshaft triggers/breaker plate, rotor and the ignitor box. All of those things get removed from the bike and trash canned.

Try changing the plugs before you buy anything else...it may make all the difference in the world. Most of the time it's the simple stuff....unless it's making a loud clanking or banging noise...THEN you're in trouble...

Okie dokie, got the plugs.
All 4 are firing for now. I'm going to the parts store to get a relay for the coils.
I did test the charging system though, I connected my tester to the batt. connector at the solenoid while the bike was running and got 12v instead of 14.5v. Crap.
Well, I guess I gotta got to the stator papers.
I really appreciate all the help guys. It may have only been the plugs, but it helped me conclude that I need to get a dyna kit to cut-off any future problems and voltage shortages I have now.

Sounds to me like your battery got low and the plugs were marginal, no need to go and replace the normally reliable ignition system. Regulator is another matter though; ditch the stock one and get something better. I’m using a late model Honda R/R off a CBR, several other members here are using similar or the older Honda style R/R with the sense wire. Tons of info in the archives on this subject.Ed
