    Weird 700 behavior

Today I rode my GS700e from Kansas city to Union MO. This is 195 miles on the 4 lane and 30 miles rural highway. All went well but I was a bit cold.

The bike did engage in some odd behavior and it was not the first time it did this but I believe I may have collected a bit of significant new data. Although I do not know what it means.

The behavior. I was going along the highway (+= 75 mph long hill) and the bike seemed as though it was running out of gas. This has happened before. I have wondered if the carb floats were low or if the petcock is failing, but on this occassion I noticed something new. When this bike is cruising on the highway it is running between 5000 and 5500 RPMs at 70 to 75 mph. On this occassion when it was cutting out I looked down and the tach showed 8000 rpm. (it was not runnning that hard)

I pulled over on the highway and the bike died, restarted and I went on and the problem did not return the remainder of the ride (1 &1/2 hours).

The 700 has an elecronic tach. Since I had this experience last I have swapped the carbs on the bike.

I don't have my schematic with me. It is in KC. It seems to me that where ever the tach getting its information may be the area of weakness in the electrical system that causes the odd and occassional behavior. Over the 2 years I have had the bike this kind of behavior or some variation of it has occurred. Since the bike has pods and a 4 to 1 I have always assumed this is a fuel issue. Now with the peculiar tach behavior I am thinking it may be an electical issue but what part? Since it is a sporadic fault typical testing may prove fruitless but maybe the tach can direct me to the faulty part.

So if this tirade gives anyone ideas I would be interested in hearing from you.

Fuel flow. I bet your petcock is suspect.

Of course you may be correct, but how does the petcock account for the tach behavior? Or are you suggesting they are unrelated?

HMM, I wonder where the tach gets it's info. Could it be the coils?
