Collapsed internal exhaust ???
Hello everyone. I was working on my 1981 gs650L this morning and ended up taking the exhaust off in doing so I noticed a clanking at the rear of the exhaust when I shook it. Sounds like a bunch of particles sloshing around. I’m thinking that the internal components have broken down/collapsed. I’m not sure what all is in these things, is it just a silencer or is there a cataladic converter in there as well? Any ideas as to how to get the junk out of there with out cutting it open. All so will removing the internal components require rejetting the carbs. Thanks for the ideas and help.

Greetings: There are no cats in the system. As far as removing the bits and pieces from the exhaust, without cutting things apart, I'm not sure it can be done. If you do pull it apart and remove the baffels...not only will it sound wierd to say the least...but there is a good chance that you'll have to rejet to get things dialed in again. At that rate...you'de be better off going with an aftermarket pipe. My .02

Hi George,
Odds are it'll be okay. I had the same problem with my 750L when I first bought it. Whatever broke loose in the muffler would make an obnoxious buzzing noise when the engine was running 2-3K. I pulled the exhaust and couldn't find a way to open it so I held it upside down and shook it to see if I could get the piece to fall out. Apparently it lodged itself in something and I haven't had the problem since. Knock on wood...:-D1981 GS750L
