If your using a Honda RR , did you connect the black lead to the rear brake light switch to provide it with a reference? The Honda uses the black lead to read how much the bike is using. Splice it into a wire that is 12 volts with the key on.1981 GS650G , all the bike you need

It could be broken, it could have a bad connection on a sense lead, maybe something else
It WILL cause the battery to gas (a lot probably)
I would not ride it like that.
Check the battery fluid levels, if they are low, refill with distilled water.
(available at grocery stores)
