GS65G cam end covers

    GS65G cam end covers


    Are these held on by 2 screws from the bottom that are tough to remove or do they just pry off? I have been fumbling with a 90 degree screw driver and cant seem to get on the screw head...then if I do there isn't much room to turn it. I guess you can only take them off after the cam cover is off. I have one scre missing on one of the end caps and wanted to put another in....guess I'll have to wait until I adjust the valves.

    I am fairly certain that you can remove the valve cover complete with the caps, and then turn the whole thing upside-down and remove the screws with a small screwdriver if you still feel the need.

    I could be totally wrong about that, of course.

      Yeah, definitely held on by 2 screws that are accessible after removing the cam cover.

        and use blue loc-tite on them when you do this.

          I had the same problem and couldn't get at the screws until I took off the valve cover. That doesn't necessarily mean it's impossible. Unfortunately, it was 20+ years ago and I can't remember if I saw a way it could have been done without removing the cover had I understood how things were arranged. My best guess is that it is impossible.

            They can be tightened on the bike without removing valve cover but it is a royal pain. I had to use a ratcheting lever style screwdriver with a "custom" length philips bit (used a saw and cut 2 inch bit to correct length). Even with this, there is very limited space to get bit into cover and then into screw.

            I suggest either live with the loose cover and wait for it to fall off (lot of fun to catch while riding, don't ask me how I know8-[) or bite bullet and remove valve cover. Be smart and get valve cover gasket first, then you may not need it. Please note that for 82 650 shaft models they have 17 bolts to hold done valve cover. The parts diagram you are using is for a 81 16 bolt cover. The valve cover gasket is different between the two and not interchangeable. Check ebay, they come up occasionally for cheap.

            I used small stainless steel bolts with lockwashers to keep mine in place. Believe they were 5mm x 12mm, picked them up at Home Depot.

              I wondered why there were 2 figures and hadn't noticed the difference in the number of bolts. I'll have to look closer at this figure for the 17 bolt cover

              I also noticed that Real Gasket doesn't list a cover gasket for this cover....only the 16 bolt one. I will make an offer on the one on Ebay. Thanks for the tip. :-D

              on edit: The part numbers are the same for both of the Ebay gaskets, 11173-34212 but the number that is called out for the above fig.2 is 11173-34210 hmmmmmmmm

                Actually, some '82 650s (like mine) came with the 16 bolt cover and some came with 17. In the parts 'fiche for the '82 650G there are two listings for cylinder head cover with F.No. 103560 after it, I believe that corresponds to the frame number (someone correct me if I'm wrong). You should count the # of bolts in your valve cover so that you order the correct gasket.

                  Yep, mine is a 16 bolt cover...it doesn't have the extra bolt opposite the tach drive onb the "nose". Thanks for pointing this out...now I can order that Realgasket.
