    mysterious trans leak

    Hi all,

Well I am currently in the middle of doing a complete upper end gasket and o-ring job. But, today I noticed gear oil on my garage floor. After a quick investgation, it seems to be coming from a hole located in a small opening just in front of the gear indicator switch on the left side of the bike. My Clymer manual does not show this at all. Is there a weep hole for the tranny? There doesn't appear to be any threads like a screw fell out.I really hope someone can help out on this one. I am close to being able to ride after a hellish Maine winter

    Many thanks,

    Scott

What sort of bike might you have? The GSR Hive Mind is nearly omniscient in motorcycle matters, but it needs at least a little info to work with.

    A photo would help, too.

Might you have discovered the Mystery Hole? Search the forum for the term Mystery Hole, and marvel...

      Mr. scottgs,

Mr. bwringer has some great photos of the suspect mystery hole in this thread:

      Do you have an 850?

      Thank you for your indulgence,

          mysterious trans leak...... update

          Hi all,

This hole is located on the left side of the motor just in front of the shifter indicator switch in a smaller opening. There is no drain tube coming out of it, shuold it be the drain for the starter box. I tried to take a picture but I could not get a good shot. I guess the question is; if this is a drain, then why is there 90w leaking from it?

Also, this an 81 GS850G. I'm sorry I left that out in my previous post.

          Many thanks,

          Scott

The butler, in the kitchen, with the pipe

            Hi Mr. scottgs,

Mr. bwringer put that tube in the starter cavity drain hole just to make it more visible. On the 850 you'll see a breather hose (located about 3" in from the fill plug) coming from the top of the bevel gear case that leads to the starter cavity. The bevel gear case vents into the starter cavity and out of the "mystery hole". In the picture below you can see an aluminum cap with a hose running to the starter cavity. The fill plug is near the center of the picture, the vent hose is near the top next to the airbox cap.

The bevel gear case vent hose doesn't go all the way through the "mystery hole". It allows any vapors to escape. Those vapors may condense and drip from the "mystery hole" too. If you have too much drip then you may have overfilled the bevel gear case. Remove the oil level screw and let the excess drain. There's a bevel gear oil change guide on my little BikeCliff website. But don't overfill it like I did.

Is the mystery solved yet? :-D

            Keep us informed.

            Thank you for your induglence,

            BassCliff
