    Valve gauge question?

so everwhere i read it talks about lining up cylinder one and 4 but not two or three. so here is my question. when measuring the clearance, it says to put number one parallel with the valve cover so are you suppose to measure number two where it sits when you line up number one. same goes for all the others, intake and exhaust side.

    thanks

    Hi Mr. SDK,

That's right. Line up just the outside valve and measure two clearances. Line up #1 exhaust and measure the clearance on #1 and #2 exhaust. Line up #4 exhaust and measure #3 and #4 exhaust clearances. Line up #4 intake and measure #3 and #4 intake clearances. Line up #1 intake and measure #1 and #2 intake clearances. If you haven't already, check my little BikeCliff website for more information and a manual for your 850G.

    Keep us informed.

    Thank you for your indulgence,

    BassCliff

With #1 exhaust pointing forward, parallel to the gasket surface, you are then supposed to check #1 and #2 exhaust valves for clearance. This is important since both valves will be unloaded and on the base circle of the cam. With both adjacent valves on the base circle, the cam is in its most neutral position – with only one cam on the base circle the adjacent valve will be pushing up which skews the cam in the journal clearance affecting the valve lash clearance.

The other valves are likewise affected similarly. Frankly, I’m not sure how important it is to have the clearance perfect, but considering the tight lash clearance specification, I’d say it pays to pay attention.

        Thanks

          Hi Mr. SDK,

Remember to point the #1 and #4 exhaust cams forward when you are checking the exhaust clearances. Point the #1 and #4 intake cams up when checking the intake clearances. Keep us informed.
