    gs1000e charging system

Greetings to all of my GS family!

I have just installed a new stator and reg/rectifier on my 1979
only to have the same problem............not charging!
I have read a lot of posts here about this problem and have a
question for anyone who might have the answer.........where is
the main ground located so I may check and clean it and maybe
solve my problem? I have had this bike to a shop that I thought
might be able to fix it, only to have them tell me that they had
tried a number of different combinations of things, but to no avail.
They tried a couple of used stators..(so I was told anyway).. and all
of them tested bad. I am open to any help before i try another shop.

    Thanks for the great site!

    Hey Rick,

Don't know this for sure but on my bike it is located at the back of the motor down low on the block.

Rick, My 79 750e main ground was located under my airbox in the rear center of the engine. Its not hard to get to with my bike, yours may be different.

I don't know if you saw the problem that I was having last week with my charging system, but it was similar. In addition to cleaning the main ground I added a ground from the Neg. side of the battery to the metal panel on which all my electronics are mounted. I gained 1/2 a volt to ground and it made a tremendous difference. I'm no expert, but from what I learned, the Regulater/ Rectifier wont work properly if it doesn't have at least 12 V. to ground. Mine had 11.98 and didn't work until I brought it up to 12.42. Check it out with a voltmeter and read the flow chart from Electrex which trouble shoots the charging system. That was a very valubale tool.

I used perferated steal ribbon for my ground. Worked like a charm.

        Good luck,

          Elec woes

In my opinion, we all have so many RR problems due to the fact that the mounting bracket for the RR is rubber mounted. I assume that is due to the fact that the starter relay in on the same mount. That makes for a poor ground on the RR which is key to it working properly. Most here take the pos and neg wires of the RR straight to the battery. I fixed mine by adding a heavy jumper from the frame (ground) to the same bolt on the starter relay that the RR black wire goes to. Either fix is highly recommended and works great and should be done by all before they have trouble, in my opinion that is.
