Avoid draining oil for cover removal?

i have to my clutch cover off on my 82 gs1100L to change the gasket, and i just changed the oil. my question is, if i put the bike on the side stand, will any oil come out when i break the old gasket seal?

When you pop the cover off oil will come out. Just ask my garage floor. He knows all about it :P I wasnt even thinking just took it off lol.

When I changed the plates and springs on my clutch I didn't drain the oil.. not the exact same bike, (81 750L) but I wouldn't think that you would need to drain the oil. Also when I did that, I had the oil drain pan under the clutch cover just in case, i put a small rag over the hole in the drain pan so just incase a screw fell in there i could just grab it. Also if oil comes out just move the rag and it goes in the pan. But I dont think you should have a problem. Just make sure it is on the side stand.

I have done clutch work on my wife's 850L, my son's 650L and my former Kawasaki 1300. Had them all on the side stand and did not lose more than the couple of drops that were trapped by the webbing supports inside the cover.

Not to say that your 1100 won't drip any, but at least there's a chance. 8-[

Please let us know how it works out. I'm going to have to install new clutch springs in my GS1100 and wondered about the same thing.:-D

k sounds good guys. ill give you a heads up tomorrow afternoon. i doubt it will leak much if not at all. i mean tilted to the side the oil disappears from the sight glass, and when straighted back up, it takes a bit to see the oil again.

You could lower it all the way onto the ground onto some blankets or old couch cushions.

I have a chanfall, so I lower it with that.

I once laid a GSX-R 600 onto it's side on some old couch cushions to replace some rashed covers(crankcase, starter, stator, etc. The bike lowsided and snagged a handlebar on a grate and flipped over 3 times 0.0) without spilling a drop of oil, excepting the few residual drops on the covers.

My GS1000 won't lose any if I pull the clutch cover while on the side stand.

yup, no oil loss when its tilted on the side stand. it was a little over filled and i still didnt lose any.
