Couple silly questions, why honda RR and what is this thing??

When I took apart my battery box/electrical panel there was the big black rectangular thing between the electrical panel and the battery box. Cant seem to find it on flatout, perhaps I am not looking in the right place?

What is it?

And lastly whats the deal with the Honda R/R's ? Why?

On my GS1000 there is a black box right beside the fuse box, it's the igniter. I think the Honda R/R is durable and reliable, as opposed to the POS Suzuki made in those years.

Hi Mr. mortation,

The original Suzuki r/r part was a wimp. The Honda r/r part (I got mine from Mr. duaneage) is much more robust. Below you see the old one on the left and the new one on the right. More surface cooling area means longer life. Plus the Honda part has a "sense" wire that helps regulate the output so that you don't overcook your battery.

The box thing is the igniter unit. At $400.00 a pop I can deal with the rough look of it lol.

Yep, igniters are stupid expensive.
Suzuki R/R's work fine, until they don't and fry the electrics in your bike.

Yes, Mr. doctorgonzo is right. The stock Suzuki r/r part works fine, until it breaks. Send Mr. duaneage a PM and ask about his $40 special. He'll fix you up.

No negativity directed toward duaneage, but I bought a late model CBR R/R off ebay for $28 shipped. My thinking is that newer technology is the way to go when it comes to electrics - although R/R's are very basic technology from when I hear. Either way the Honda part is way better although if you get a proper ground established on the Suzuki R/R, you will give it a fighting chance.

R/R failure and the havoc it created was the final nail in the coffin of my 1975 Honda 400 four with the stock 4 into 1 pipe. REALLY rare bike that I would give anything to have back from whatever junkyard it finally wound up in.

I've had really good luck using GSXR1000 R/Rs on several bikes (even on Hondas!), and they're really cheap compared to other bikes.

Last ones I bought on eBay were roughly $30 apiece.

They're far larger than most OEM rectifiers, so cooling potential is huge.

I always use Posi-Lock connectors when swapping rectifiers to keep them simple to change on the side of a road. The connectors are reusable, the connection is tough as nails, and you can get waterproof connectors if your installation would place the rectifier in the open. They're also pretty convenient if you're connecting wires of different guages - you can use one end from a large connector and the other end from a smaller connector, for instance...

I went the same route and bought a new model GSXR(####) R/R off ebay for 28$ for my 550... wired right up and haven't had a charging problem since...
