Well, from your thoughts and input I have decided to do the mod, but only after I get the bike running first. The reason for this is because I am sure me not getting the bike started was a fuel starvation problem. But at the same time I want to get a bigger thicker blue spark from my coils. I left the battery on the charger last night and I will check for a thicker spark after that. So if I get it started, and I still have a weak spark it will be the coil relay mod next for me. I would like the wife's bike to start up quicker and run better. I can see this mod helping in those areas. I will also take a look at BassCliff's website for further instructions on the mods. I could use an easier explanation and so far BassCliff hasn't done me wrong.

good advice to get it running first. i waited for this exact reason, just like i am waiting to do my clutch springs till i get it running again. i did the mod because i have a cold #3 pipe and i cant bring myself to tear the carbs apart AGAIN, yet. so i figured i would improve my spark first, since that is at least forward progress.

oh, and i was kidding about the harley. cant afford one after all the money ive spent on my gs...hehehe

Yeah I have a cold #1 pipe, so I am in the same boat. I need this mod, but I do want to get the bike started first. I have been looking at Harleys lately, but I could never afford one (until I retire) and I don't think I would ride one anyways.

LoL, I am with you :P For the cash I have dumped in my ride if I had just saved it all I could have grabbed an Evo. But to late to turn back now, and I do love my suzi!

Yep, paid $1000.00 for the bike, probably $1500.00 on top of that in it already (if you count tools like a carbtune), and another $1000.00 to go (by the time I get new pipes and tires and various other things I'm going to replace), but no way in hell I could have paid $3500.00 for the bike I'll have and I'll know every inch of it.

Wow, I guess I am just getting started the GS was $1000 and I have put about $300 into it and about $400 in tools for both bikes. I have a long way to go....

Well, I have gone a little crazy, but I am hot rodding mine a little as well as making it an every day rider. Here's a PARTIAL list

                K & N Pods
                Dynajet stage 3 kit
                Green dyna coils
                Machined fasteners for the carbs
                Machined fasteners for the engine
                New replacement petcock from Z1
Progressive 412 Series shocks for the rear
                Entire new wiring harness
                New Turn Signal Control Unit
                New turn signal relay
New Igniter (BIG mistake. I'd get a dyna ignition if I had it to do over)
New (used) left side control (button broke off mine)

The third day I had it home, it was coughing out the carbs, caught the air filter on fire inside the airbox and fried part of the wiring (as well as turn signal control and relay and partial wire burn on igniter). Some of the part purchases arose from this, but SO glad I did it. Gonna save me headaches down the road.

No, because I I can't get pictures off my phone onto computer (can't even email) and don't own a digital camera. My girlfriend who has a digital gets back from vacation tomorrow, so hopefully next week. It's an 81 GS1000G black with the Gold Emblems.

FINALLY getting it running pretty good. Valves next weekend. I finally found a deserted and clear highway spot yesterday to open it up a bit I was at 7500 RPM doing 75 MPH as I shifted from 4th to 5th gear, got scared of the old ass tires and backed off.

Oh, yeah no doubt. You never know what those old crudy tires are going to do.

I ran some test and here is what I found.

                          Battery: 12.71

                          1st Coil: 9.5?

                          2nd Coil: 9.68 but sometimes 11.1

Does this call for the Coil Relay Mod? Could this be my starting problem and small spark problem? Also can I check what the voltage is coming out of the coils, wires and caps? How do I go about doing this safely?

Mine was worse than that, dropping all the way to 8 at the coils, probably from the old kill switch. Personally, no harder or more expensive than it is, I'd do it (the relay mod) BUT it's probably not the whole answer. If there is any way you could get a probe to touch at the coil end of the spark plug wire you could check resistance (should be zero) and you can check resistance on the cap (should be 5 Ohms). That being said, at $3.00 each (or so) I'd get all new caps. I put in new coils, did the relay mod, installed new wires and got new caps for 2 & 3 (the caps for 1 & 4 were out of stock at local dealer) and I STILL had problems with cylinder 1 and sometimes 4. Guess what fixed it.... getting the new caps for cylinder 1 & 4. It hasn't missed or fouled a plug since.

                              Cory,

You would need a machine that costs more than your bike is worth.

Here's the garage standard - pull all 4 plugs, put them on the sparks plug wires and ground them to the motor.
Then, once it's dark out, hit the starter button and check your sparks
                              Red is dead
                              Blue is true
                              White is allright!

A blue /white spark is optimal. It should be nice and fat (wide) also.

Keep in mind that it takes more voltage to make a spark under compression. The spark test isn't definitive.
