Is there a special swith or button I am supposed to push?

After replacing the oil in both bike, they wont start. Both bike started before doing the oil, what did I do wrong? Is it oil level? Is there some special button I am supposed to push when I am done with the oil change that tells the bike it can run?

I am about ready to get rid of the bikes. I want to ride, and not work on them any longer. I thought I was so close on the wife's GS, now I am back to the drawing board.

Here are some things I notices: Dry cold compression test:

    1 - 120psi
    2 - 120psi
    3 - 119psi
    4 - 120psi

Sparkplugs are throwing a light, small and blue spark... Should the spark be fairly big in size? I can barely see it, and sometimes it is red/orange.

    What's going on guys?

    I feel your pain!

I can totally relate to how you're feeling.

Not sure I can help with your starting problem. The bikes will start/run even with no oil in them. So changing the oil/filter are independent of the starting problem.

If you push the start button, does anything happen?

You mentioned the spark plugs so I'm going to assume its cranking/sparking?

If you're getting to that stage then the logical place to check is fuel. See if its getting to the carbs. If they've sat for a while, you probably need to put the petcock in prime position for a few minutes before trying to start them, and open up the choke too....

    good luck!

As far as I know it's getting fuel. The petcock is brand new and the carbs just thoroughly cleaned and rebuild with Robert's O-rings. Should I pull bowl drains to check for fuel? Any other test for fuel checks?

Maybe I will put the petcock on PRIme and let it sit a few minutes. I wasn't putting it on PRIme very long because I don't want gas in my oil. If it doesn't run with the PRIme and the choke what next?

Should I put the bike on PRIme and open the choke and let is sit a for a few minutes. Then try to start it? How long can I keep the PRIme before I start getting gas in the oil?

Unless your float valves are knackered or your float heights are way off.You wont get fuel in your oil if you leave the petcock in prime while you are trying to start the bike.
            Good luck mate

I have always heard a Fat Blue spark is desirable, are the batteries fully charged? If so the coils might be suspect. In any event, You have come too far to turn back because a Non Running bike is by definition a parts bike and sale prices reflect that. Get them running and Ride!

I wondered about the strength of the spark when I rebuilt my 'S.spark from standard coils is fairly weak looking but seems to work OK.It'll be something stupid,so don't give up old mate. We've all been there etc and come out the other side smiling.BOTH bikes won't start.Yep,something stupid.Cheers,Simon.:-D

Try a little starting fluid. Just this once to get you rolling.

I would guess you're having the same issue I had... which seems to be that they frequently won't get spark with lowish batteries, even though they seem to be getting spark.

Charge the batteries overnight and/or use some carb cleaner/starter fluid. Pull out fuses for headlight/other stuff as well (not for charging system, just stuff that's needed for the street but not the track)

red/orange spark is totally weak. should be at least blue, fat blue would be perfect. did you invest in the coil relay mod?

putting it on prime for 5 minutes wont hurt it.

                            Dont give up mate.
My bike would not start after an oil change, new plugs, new leads, carbs all done etc etc....
I was ready to push the poxy thing down a bank! any way I did the relay in the coil mod.
First push on the button and the old girl fired up!
                            Cheers

I was going to say the same thing Cory. Grab a multimeter and check the voltage at the ign coil with ign switched on. Let us know what you read. If it is below 12vdc do the coil relay mod. Get some decent voltage to those coils.
                              Cheers. Don
