I will take a couple snaps tonight. Actually i had planned to double check the timing in this motor i have redone to go back in the cafe project. I can show you the basics of it, but i wont break the cams all the way down, unless of course MY timing is messed up. Like i said, its alot easier than it sounds. I just helped N1Elkyfan ( we had to take the top end off his bike to do something) and i had never put it backtogether, took me a couple tries to get it just right, but that was ( I think) cos the tensioner was still in it. She now starts and runs like a champ from what he says. So i must not have screwed it up! lol

Thank you! I appreciate it. A couple other things I am going to check are my air mixture screws, and the knowb on the bottom of the carbs the main screw. I have it turned all the way in, so the butterflies are completely open. I may try screwing it out to close them, and see if the bike starts. Or at least tries to.Cory

To ME, that is one reason the bike may not be starting. If the butterflies are open very much past idle position, there won't be enough vacuum in the carbs to pull fuell through the "choke" circuits. Back off that knob until it is not touching the mechanism, turn it until it just touches, then another full turn.

The "choke" circuit on these bikes does not work anything at all like the choke systems on the cars we had when we were growing up. On the cars, there was a plate that physically blocked the intake to the carbs, hence the term "choke". You could open the throttle to clear it a bit if it flooded, but it would still start.

Our bikes have an "enrichener" circuit that merely opens another fuel passage. It is necessary to have a good bit of vacuum to pull the fuel through this circuit, and that vacuum is destroyed when you open the throttle.

I don't know what I have been thinking lately. Last night it came to me though, if I am trying to run my bike on choke with the butterflies wide open it's not going to run. So I will try today to close those suckers and I bet you all it starts right up! Then I will probably do the relay mod, just because it sounds like fun!

I closed the butterflies, then but the screw about 1 turn in, so they were slightly open and the bike still didn't start (all I get is the starter motor running, there is no sound of firing at all). I did notice though my battery was in the low 11 volts, so I am charging it and will try again a little later.

Pilot screws for your 550 should be set to 3 turns from lightly seated.

Set them at the same time you adjust that throttle stop back down.

These bikes typically like to start best with the choke out and no additional throttle. The rpm will sore but once you turn the choke down, the engine speed will drop.

                  Good luck.

That is exactly what how it was starting before I changed the oil. Hopefully I can bring it back to life. Thanks for the luck.

It's Alive! Thanks guys for the advice and help. One last thing, and I will probably repost this question elsewhere, but the number 1 pipe isn't cold, but it is cooler than the other 3. Any suggestions?

Sync your carbs, check for vacuum leaks.
