    K&N SU-1250 vs. Amsoil nanofiber

    I was looking at Amsoil's site, and found a filter that seems to flow pretty well, but still filter very well Here's a link: http://www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/eaau.aspx. I've never thought K&N filtered well enough, even though I had one of their stock replacements for my 1977 GS 750. There is a fair amount of tech data scattered throughout Amsoil's site. Any opinions on this? I'm planning on using the stock airbox on my 1979 GS 1000, but using either a K&N SU-1250 stock replacement filter or a similarly sized Amsoil Ea without the filterbox, and I wondered if the Amsoil showed promise. Their oils are excellent, and I'm hoping their filters live up to their claims. BTW, I've been in touch with them about coming up with an equivalent to the SU-1250, as on K&N's website, that filter fits about 25 different Suzukis.

    Amsoil makes great products, but is that $50+ per filter? EXPENSIVE.

      I've been using a K & N on my GS bikes since 1986, about 260,000 miles. Save your money, stop worrying, and enjoy your GS.

        Grandpa, any cylinder reboring?

        I know the lower ends on these things are bulletproof, but in 260,000 miles, have you had to rebore/rering many times? Not arguing, just asking, as engine longevity is important to me, and you have a track record with the K&N to give real-world results. Do you run the K&N in the stock filterbox, or with just the stock airbox as I'm planning to do? The K&N oem replacement is $44 at bikebandit, so the price differential is only the fact that you need to replace the Amsoil every few years, as opposed to once for the K&N.

          I've owned five different GS shafties, four 850's and now my GS1100GK. No rebores or rerings on any of them. The same air filter in all five bikes.

          My present bike, the GK, has 126,000 miles on it in the 8 years I've owned it; 101,000 of the miles are mine. Top end has never been dismantled. I have the K & N in the stock filter box. That K & N has been in all my GS's since 1986.

          I have the GK serviced once a year, around Thanksgiving, by the independent mechanic I've been going to since 1992. He services the air cleaner, and he also does the valve adjustment and syncs the carbs. I change my own oil every couple of thousand miles.

          Surprisingly, on my second 850, a GS850GZ (1982), it was the bottom end that failed, at 80,000 miles. My mechanic thinks it may have led a hard life before I bought it. Nothing's perfect...

          The GK is a daily runner -- best bike I've ever owned in my 38 years of riding. Longevity and reliability is what it's about.

            Your results have convinced me; I ordered a K&N replacement filter yesterday.
