550 Head Compatibility
Are all 2 valve 550 heads interchangeable or is there a difference between the VM and CV carbed engines?Tags: None

Different. VM carb heads have smaller ports.Ed

As he said. All 8 valve heads will physically bolt on, but you need to use the appropriate carbs for that year model. Earlier heads = VM, Later heads = CV type carbs. Up to and including '79 use VM carbs, all later models from'80 on use the CV carbs.Originally posted by Nessism View PostDifferent. VM carb heads have smaller ports.

if you look about though a GS650 head will fit on the 550 bottom end with a little modification...

SKREEMER will the GS550B cams bolt into the 650 head. Will the 550 valve cover fit the 650 head. I know on the 550/650 conversion you must use the smaller cam sprocket (because of less teeth on the 550 crankshaft compared with the 650 shaft), but will the 550 camshafts actually bolt onto the 650 head.Originally posted by skreemer View Postif you look about though a GS650 head will fit on the 550 bottom end with a little modification...

you can swap the cams... but the valve cover won't fit. IIRC there's an extra screw or a screw position is off when going from one to another...
