Man I love being in Metric Canada. we still have a lot of Imperial, or SAE hardware, but at my local Canadian Tire the bolt section is about 50/50, SAE and Metric, although my fuss is that some of the Japanese bolt lengths at 35mm, 45mm, and 55mm, and here I can find 35mm sometimes, but I'm yet to see a 45 or 55mm length sunken hex head.

mcmaster.com.. or McMaster Car is a great company, and you can get just about anything from them. They are rather timely with delivery, and very professional. Just about every mechanical thesis project at my university uses them, as do most of the professors. They have the best selection I've ever been able to find, and carry a lot of odds and ends.

oh, and just an after thought to you grenades... ever consider getting a Tap and Die set?

Yes we thought about tapping it but the engineer genious that welded the stems for me decided that the grenades are most likely "pot metal" and therefore difficult if not impossible to work easily with. He was thinking mainly about whether it could be welded but I think the same would hold true for any heavy work. I think it all turned out well in the end.

I'm proud to say that I'm pretty much done with the bike now. Any thing else will be touch-up stuff.

My local Ace hardware actually has a decent selection of Metric socket head cap screws and other metric fasteners - mostly untouched. Their selection is about 300x better than any of the big box stores I've ever been in. Barring that, hit up McMaster's website and go nuts.

As for the differences between JIS & ISO metric fasteners, I can't say, but everything metric we get now is all ISO spec. And not all American cars are all metric - many of them are half metric/half "standard" bastards.
