    New Rings

    I've been chasing my tail for over a year after my 1166 kit trying to finger bad smoking on startup and hard accel. First new valve seals, then a new head and torn apart many many times in between.
    Finally Kris V and I pulled the cylinder and checked the rings. They were all WAY out of spec. Only one year later. The rings were installed incorrectly and the ring gap was too large.
    Kris hooked me up with some Wiseco rings from Ape at a good price since he races for them and we put them in yesterday along with a good hone with a Flex-hone which worked GREAT! (Thanks Bwinger) On the ride home (Tehachapi was windy as HELL!!) it had more pop. This morning was the moment of truth and it didn't even puff a small bit. YAY!! Now to fine tune the 1150 carbs a bit more after the 500 mile break in and retourque of the head.
    I want to thank Kris for his patience and the use of his great shop and tools. He is the man.

        That's good to hear. I am also breaking in because of standard rings in a top-end rebuild. How are you breaking it in? Your bike must pull like a mad dog through the gears huh? I am happy with my 850, but wish I had the chance to get an 1150 and basically do the things that you did to your bike:-D.

                Between .022 and .028. Wiseco suggested top ring .013 and second ring .016. We didn't even have to file. They were all perfect out of the box. :-D
                Now I need to find the oil leak. The oil is wrapping around the cylinders and to the carbs and side covers. It's coming from the cylinder studs. I just bought all new copper head bolt washers (called gaskets in microfiche) and o-rings for those two odd ball head bolts. I bet this seals it up. I'll put them in when I retourque after 500 miles.

                  o-rings for those two odd ball head bolts
                  I used a liberal coating of High Heat Red Form-a-gasket RTV on my o-rings.

                      My heart was racing that morning. You don't know how many times I thought I fixed the problem to have it smoke out the neighborhood.:?
