Pulling the head shown in that one photo is a MUST; that brown crud is way down into the intake port. No way I'd trust a clean out job.

Do the job right...as you seem to be willing to do.

    Good luck.

The manual arrived today. I am gonna just take the engine out to work on it. I want to see if the piston walls are scratched etc. I can probably set the engine on a desk and just task away at it (hopefully).

Man ... this is gonna take me forever to restore

      ......................should be fun :-D

In order to turn the timing belt, I have to rotate alternator rotor bolt clockwise (also have to turn it to align TDC piston #1 and mark everything).

Now looking for alternator rotor bolt .........

If you are tearing down the engine don't even try to turn it over, all the crap in the cylinders will just tear stuff up.

Ok ... I haven't found the alternator rotator bolt so I have not turned it over. Glad I checked.

Looks like I have everything disconnected from the head (except valves) and its still glued on the side of the engine. I dont know how to crack the seal.

Rubber mallet? Or look for a pry point at the head gasket(s). Honda is typically pretty good about providing that kind of stuff.

Ok, gonna play with it a bit (first timer and I might be overly careful).

Edited: Its way too late to be banging around in my garage - neighbors will be mad at me .... gonna put this on hold.

Not meaning to hijack my own thread ....... what recommendations for painting the frame? I might as well do it with this many parts off of it. Hi-temp resistant paint?

Also, If I want to take the faring off, what sort of headlight assembly should I look for? Is there a universal one?

Here's an 'unfaired' one I spotted on Aussie ebay the other day. I thought the pics might be useful for reference.

You might want to save the pics (if you are interested) as the auction is about to end.

                        1975 ...... nice.

I have the faring but it needs minor repair. I gotta find a headlight and turn signals to ride it as a naked wing. gonna check ebay.

                          I have the head off

And yes, there is crud inside. What is the proper cleaning solution? Can I use carb cleaner? Seafoam Deep Creep? Brakekleen?

sorry for the low res pic:

Hammer and a chisel looks more appropriate for the job.

One thing's for sure-- when you get done with this one, it'll really have been a labor of love.

I just got back from advance auto (all the guys that work there know me by first name).

I showed them pics and they took me to the back of the store (yeah, I get free reign of the place :-D)

They showed me the fuel lines they have, cleaners, degreasers that wont harm the valve seals etc. so i got just some ordinary carb and choke cleaner and gasket remover and razor blades.
