    Advice on seat cover please

    Hi

My seat cover is officially torn. I have to get me a new one.
My bike is a 1982 GS850G. There are a couple for sale on Ebay but they all specify ''models 79 to 81''. Is the 1982 seat different from the 1981? Other than that, anyone has a suggestion for a good replacement seat cover?

    Thanks

I would look up the part numbers on Carolinacycle.com and compare them. Also look into a travelcade cover or contact the seller and see if they have one for your bike in particular. All the websites listed above are good, but they are all really pricey.

        Cover your seat

        Hi Mr. zblip,

My seat has a hinge on the left side and unlocks from the right to swing up and open. Did this change in '82? Does yours have the lock in the back? Feel free to check out the seat cover replacement guide on my little BikeCliff website and check the greeting-info-vendors page for all of our favorite suppliers. I used a Travelcade Saddlemen from denniskirk.com. Their website says the model (S631) will fit your bike.

        Thank you for your indulgence,

        BassCliff

Sargent and Saddlemen won't help, either, unless you send in your seat and a large wad of cash. And yes, the '82+ seat is different.

          But have no fear...

They will make your seat cover in your choice of classy to tacky vinyl colors using an OEM pattern and shape.

One warning -- do NOT get the "texture" style vinyl -- it sort of looks like a basketweave or carbon fiber pattern. It looks great, but it is full of HOLES. Thousands of tiny perforations, leaking water into your seat foam... not good.

Order any of the other vinyls, and you'll be extremely happy. Their materials and craftsmanship are first-rate.

The textured vinyl is just an extremely stupid choice for a motorcycle that ever gets ridden outdoors.

Im not sure about Sargent, but like Cliff did, I got a Saddleman cover (Travelcade back then) from Dennis Kirk for about $50 ($90 today) and installed it myself.

Saddleman made a cover for my bike, I think $54. Easy to install well constructed, it had a little extra foam and pulled the old foam tight.
                No more duct tape.

What I meant was that Saddlemen and Sargent (and Travelcade) do NOT have a seat or seat cover listing for this particular bike, the 82-83 GS850G.

However, they do make seat covers for many other GS models, and their stuff is high-quality. I believe they both do excellent custom work as well, but you have to send in your seat and a large sum of money and wait a few weeks.

                      Premium

Brian, I have another question for you or anyone who's dealt with B&H. What's the deal with the additional $7 for "premium black material"? Is it worth it and how is it different? Thanks!:-D

Only thing I didn't like about B&H is that it didn't come with any extra padding as a part of the cover. A little extra padding goes a long way in smoothing it out and making it look nice.

Cool! Good to know the later GS850 is finally getting some love. It's been several years since I tried to find one.

OK, I recieved my Saddlemen seat cover. I installed it as prescribed. I must say though, I wasn't impressed with the quality. First, the inner foam layer was not sowed in correctly and was two inches off centered. Second, all around the edge of the seat cover, there is a one inch wide strip of vinil folded on its self in the center of wich, there is a cord running. That strip is what you pull on (real hard), fold around under the seat's rim, and hook on pointed spikes that stick out of the seat's under structure rim. That in its self is ok exept for the fact that the seem between the strip and the rest of the seat cover has 1/2 inches or more extra fabrick sticking out. That means that when you pull on the rim to turn it around the under seat to hook it to the spikes, you got that clomzee extra fabrik in the way between the strip and the spike. I ended up fighting with the seat a lot and finally I tore the seem at one place. Crumy... Luckily, it's at a place ti doesn't show ( at the back of the seat, under the tail section). Still, I wish the quality would have been better, and the material less rigid. I compared the original seat cover with the new. The original one fits better and the material is more flexible and elastic. Must have been a whole lot easier to install](*,)
