    1982 Gs850g

Ok so I am very close to getting this bike that has been sitting for a long time running. After numerous problems and part failures I can't sleep at night because i am so close. Just a couple of simple questions.

When I bought the bike it has NGK B7ES spark plugs in the machine. The book and resourses says it needs B8ES's. I know they are cheap and i have a set on the way but why would the previous owner have them in there. A would it make that big of a difference for the bike not to run properly? and B what reasons would that person have knowingly replaced the sparks with the wrong ones?

Its an 82 GS850 with only 28K miles on it. I have already replaced the ignition with a dyna s. I am not sure what a switched positive is? I need to connect the wire to a switched positive. I can connect it straight to positive and get the sparks that I need. Can anyone lend a hand?

Final question. There are two different ignition coils on the bike. One is a black color suzuki 33410-34210, 129700-0850. The other is a tan clearly old looking one with no information on it. They both seem to fire fine except that every now and then only cylinder 1 will fire and then every now and then only 2,3, and 4 will fire. I know its a long shot but has anyone else ever ran into this problem? Thank You

Every problem you can think of has been covered on this board.

I would think the previous owner put different plugs in it because it wasn't running right and he thought it would be a band aid or that's all he could find. I believe the plugs you have in there now run colder than the stock ones.

I also would change your coils to a matched set, or at least do the coil relay mod to see if your running issues go away., might even fix the problem that prompted the previous owner to change the plugs.

Couple of things...the 82 850 does not come with a mechanical advance mechanism, did you add one from an earlier bike when you installed the Dyna S? The stock ignitor handles the advance duties on your 82 - but the Dyna S replaces the ignitor thus the need for the mechanical advancer (sorry if you know this already, just trying to make sure).

Regarding the coils, they fire in pairs; 1-4 and 2-3. If you see strange spark occurrences that don't fire in pairs like this it points to either the plug, plug wire, or plug cap.

BTW, switched positive is a hot wire that turns on with the ignition switch.

Hope this helps and good luck.

The 7 is the hotter plug. I run them in my bike (because it runs a little rich) the 9 is the colder plug.
