    sob story/clutch cable question

Spent about 2 hours yesterday with come toothbrushes, scrub brishes, round bristle brushes, citrus cleaner, purple power, etc., cleaning the covers and fins and evrything I could get to. Had it clean, and almost starting to shine. My other project, whichextended into today, between sign painting, grass cutting, laaundry, bla bla and so on, was to adjust the clutch cable. The very 1st time I was gonna ride my 850 was last weekend til I noticed that sitting in my drive with the bike in neutral and the clutch squeezed all the way in, when I dipped it into 1st, the bike wanted to go before I even started to relax mt grip. I had about 1/2 tank of gas with some seafoam in it, and noticed that there was a little smoke coming from the pipes when I had it sitting there idling. Figures the foam ewas working on whatever gunk was still there from winterover. So, today, I had the cable adjusted where I thought it should be, and noticed that it all of a sudden was moving REALLY freely, as in, I could pull the grip all the way in with my little finger alone. So, my 1st question is is that normal? I don't think so, but I'm not a mechanical genius. Now, for what really upset me with this whole day. I started the bike to take it for a ride around the block, to check and see if the clutch was working. I had it idling, albeit somewhat erratically, for a few minutes. As I stated a few weeks ago, after doind the coil relay mod, the bike has run better in my driveway at least, than it has since I bought it. New plugs, fresh gas with seafoam, I even drained the bowls and let them refill last week, to be rid of any leftover gas . All of a sudden, the idle goes down to next to nothing, bouncing off the 750 area, and when I revved it back up to about 1500-2000, I noticed a bunch of gray smoke out the tailpipes. Here;s the crux of this long whiney prose- suddenly, the bike belched, stopped dead, and I heard a squirting, dripping, something pukin out under my legs noise. (no-it wasn't anything from MY body). I look down to dee something dripping onto the starter motor cover, and the top of the case, dripping down to the ground. By the time I looked, wherever it came from was no longer the issue, cuz it was done squirtin and now jusrt dripping. It was about as dark as syrup, as thin as gas, and smelled real stroingly of gas.
Anyone have some ideas? To paraphrase someone else's statement a week ago or so. "I bought the bike to ride it, not to spend every weekend fixing something." ](*,)

    your possible areas of problems:
    - clutch cable broke
    - dirty carbs
    - float bowl gasket leaking (or faulty petcock and/or floats)
    - intake leaks

on the positive side, we've all been through similar issues before resurecting our gs's

Does your bike still have the breather hose on it? Airbox and all that? I cant remember. But it may have been fuel mixed in with the oil and puking out the breather hole. Just something to check.

The airbox, breather tube and all that are still there. I just found out today that the airfilter still looks like new, and carefully reinstalled it. I did think to check the petcock, no loose hoses (hoses are newish) or leaks that I could feel. The intakes seem to be okay. I've given away/sold all 4 sets of carbs I got from the junk run because I was trying to help others that really seemed to need them, but now I'm starting to think-hmmmm, with everything on my plate as far as the number of hours I work/teach martial arts/ paint signs, helmets, bikes, skateboards, etc, I'd reallt rather spend my minimal free time enjoying the ride, not tooling up for it. On the other hand, if this is another example of karma, I really would like to know what it is Im paying for. As with every other aspect of my life, just when I think I'm getting a little saved for the future, be it finances, time, good will, whatever, seems I just get smacked back down.

Well, Pauly, i would be more than happy to give you a hand getting it running. If you'd like, lemme know when it would work for you, and I can see what i can do about getting a day off of work to help out.

Don't let it get you down old mate. We're all in the same boat and just keep pluggin away, getting there eventually.Sounds like the KID is coming to your aid.Might have to rename him "Cisco".You probably do anyway, but what I do is everything I remove to solve a problem,I make like new when it goes back.Clean all threads, bolts, antisieze everything etc.Next time you remove the same bit,it's a piece of pi$$.Makes chasing down a fault a whole lot easier.Hang in there.Cheers,Simon.:-D
