    bike stalls when coming to a stop?

    So here's a fun one for you all... albeit maybe not as much fun as it was for me when i found myself @ a stop light twisting the throttle on my bike and getting nothing in return... but still fun.

    Heh, so I took my bike out maybe 30 min ago just to put some fresh gas in it, gas station is maybe a quarter of a mile down the road... no big deal, however this is the first time i've had my bike on the road since i finished getting it back together.

    On the way to the gas station it was fine, no problems at all, however i met with only green lights along the way so i'm not 100% sure the issue wasnt a problem beforehand. Anyway, after filling up my tank, and exiting the parking lot, i met with a red light somewhere down the road, so i squeeze the clutch and let off the gas and start slowing down... apparently in this time (it was rather windy out and i'm still not used to the sound of the bike) it decided to stall... "thats weird" i think as i'm trying to figure out what's goin on, then proceed to start the pig back up and ride away...

    a min or 2 later as i'm pulling into my driveway, i let off the clutch to coast in, slowly so as to disturb my neighbors as little as possible, and my bike immediately dies again...

    I'm at a total loss here. I've recently done some carb work to the bike, and it idles fine, engine responds properly when twisting the throttle, where do i go from here? any ideas as to what could be causing the problem or where i should start looking?

    Could be weak spark caused by a weak charging system under 2000 rpms. Is the battery good and fully charged?

      yup, battery is brand new, had it on the charger earlier today in fact as i'd run it down the day before trying to hunt down a wiring problem with the lighting system... it's fully charged, so i doubt that's it, unless its the coils. As was mentioned previously though, it idles fine around 12-1300, a little high but i can deal with that.

        Mine will do that if it is not thoroughly warmed up.. I think mine has to do with the fact that i put 20w-50 oil in, instead of 10w40 and it seems like the clutch doesn't completely engage if it is not a hot motor. i have tried adjusting it, clutch has new plates and springs in it.
        It will still want to stall though if it is not hot when i roll up to a stop sign, but if i take it down the road 10-15 min. later it is fine.

        i just ordered some new springs (ebc) they say they are 10% stronger than stock. i am hoping this will stop that.

        not sure if that could be your problem too, just throwing in my $0.02

          Double check your float levels. Its possible the bike is drowning when you slow down. My 77 750 did this to me at lights, and i found fault to be the two inside cylinder float levels were way off, allowing too much fuel in. If you find a problem there, may consider changing out your oil and filter as well, as likely some gas has made its way into the crankcase.

            hrrm... well i've adjusted the float levels to oem spec (22.4 +/- 1.0 mm) according to the "new model technical bulletin" i have for the various 80 GS550 models... but on a whim i decided to check the oil... sure enough, theres some gas there, not much, but some. I havent drained it quite yet, but you can smell it.

            I have a feeling the clutch might have something to do with it too as i've recently replaced those oem cow horn handlebars with something a bit more comfortable for me... Cables are routed a bit weird and I need to replace some of them with something shorter.

            I guess the question now is what'll happen if I adjust the carb float height to something lower than oem spec? or maybe its a jetting problem? I'm a bit lost at this point, carbs arent my thing at all, heh.

            Ideas?

              When you rebuilt them, did you change out your float valves? Its possible that they arent shutting off, or just one or two arent, causing the fuel in the oil. Or its possible that you are overly rich. Are we dealing with a completely stock set up here? (as in no aftermarket pods or pipes?) If so, what are your screws turned at? Might need to open them up a bit, but wont know without knowing where they are at.

                This is easy, don't stop for anything until you reach your destination.

                Check the throttle stop that adjusts the idle speed, one of the mounting screws may be loose and causing it to close the throttle completely.
