    Intake boots

I have an intake leak on my 79 GS1000. I bought a good set of used manifolds from a 77 750 (Which the parts catalogues say are the same). I find that my 1000 boots have the rubber o ring to seal the boot against the head. The 750 boots I bought (Which look the same and fit the head and carbs fine) do not have a rubbber o ring and are instead all rubber from the inside of the port to about half way across the face of the flange. The 750 boots had old gasket material on them. I can't find a bike on the parts diagrams that used gaskets rather than o rings on these intakes
The 750 boots are a nice tight seal on my carb throats so my question is should I use gaskets (guess I will have to make them myself) on the 750's or do I just replace the o rings on the 1000' which seem a lot less tight at the carb throat?
Has anyone used gasket material to seal their manifolds to the heads?

Those are real early boots from the 750 - I'm surprised you found a set that haven't gone completely brittle. They used a waxed card type gasket at the head so are easy enough to knock up.

Sad, you need to get another set or try and make a gasket. I just went thru this myself

high temp silicone sealant is going to work just fine
it may be a bit messy to apply though
and if you re planning on taking the boots off any time soon you may want to consider getting a set with the orings as the silicone would need to be scraped and re-applied each time you have the boots off
a tight seal at the carbs is very important
