    1980 Gs 450

Okay I just found a 1980 GS 450 for sale for $500 bucks. It has been sitting for three years pretty much because the womans father became paralyzed. There are a few minor problems such as lights that are broken, but those should be easy fixes, but here are a few major problems I need help with:

1.)When I tried to start it all that happened was the relay clicked, the starter did not turn over at all. The battery has just been charged so I know that is not the problem.

2.)When I was shifting through the gears, it would sometimes go from neutral to first to second, then nothing after that, it would just stop and the light would go off indicating the gear. when I would push it forward and back it would do the same thing except go from neutral to 2nd then 3rd. Rock it forward and back, then would go from 1st to 4th.

I was wondering if it would be worth getting the bike and trying to fix it or if anyone has any other ideas for cheap bikes that possibly run near South Bend Indiana, I would appreciate the help.

I redid 2 of these. $200...no more. $500 it would have to be running with minor problems. What you're describing COULD be easy fixes. If you get it, buy a Clymer manual.

What part of the world are you in? Maybe somebody from the resouce can help you in person.

I live in South Bend, Indiana USA. I want to try and get the bike for less so that I can have money for repairs.

Plan on a carb cleaning, new carb boot O rings, and a good cleaning of the electrical connections at the least. Don't worry about the gear selector yet. One of the bikes I redid had the same problem. Once it was running that problem went away. These bikes are fairly simple and the parts are pretty cheap so you picked a good bike to work on.

The starting problem could be a bad silenoid...pretty cheap on Ebay. Ground the terminals on the silenoid and see if the starter spins. That will tell you if that part is bad.

If you feel sorry for them you can go as high as maybe $300 without feeling like you've been taken but that would be very generous. One bike I got (my daily rider) I paid $400 for with a parts bike. The bike didn't run and after checking it over, all it needed was a good cleaning and a new igniter. The second one was pretty much complete but sat for several years...that one was $100 on Ebay.

If you get it, PM me and I can check my parts bin for what you may need. I sell VERY cheap.

Well I talked to the woman earlier and she is very firm on the $500 because she has stuff she needs to pay off.

Let it go. There are tons of them out there. Go back in a month and she will probably soften the price.

For example...here's one on Ebay about 6 hours from you...I don't know what the reserve is but the starting bid is only $150.

Yeah but I'm looking more for something that I can jump on and ride it back home, and that isn't to far from where I live.

Check the For Sale road ready section. A member has a 850 in Goshen that runs but needs some cosmetics. Worth a look anyway.
