    Anything else to do when replacing the oil pan?

    I'm replacing my oil pan, because the old one has a stripped drain plug and I couldn't get it to stop leaking. A new one was all of $37 shipped, so I figured that was worth it.

    Is there anything else I should do while I have the pan off? Obviously it's getting fresh oil and a new filter which won't be on for very long, but if there's something else that I should do while I'm down there I will.

    Yes while its off, remove and clean the oil strainer.

      Agreed - check the strainer. Mine looked like: The dark areas are varnish-like stuff - had to use a needle to get rid of it (quite a few hole in such a strainer :?)

            see the right side of your opening... where theres an empty bolt hole.....

            i think it goes there.... at least thats what it looks like...

              It also looks like one of the clips that hold the wires in place on the stator that goes up to the R/R.

                The one at the back of the kinda teardrop thing? that hole gets a gasket and there isn't any sort of cutout for the metal thing.


                If it's a clip from the stator... did this come from the inside of the engine or did it manage to fall in from the outside (when I pulled off the oil pan it came off all of a sudden, so I could imagine something falling off somewhere)? I guess I need to pull that cover and fix it...

                  Any other ideas? What are my odds of managing to reuse the gasket on the stator cover, I'm pretty sure it's less than a year old...

                    That's definitely a clip from the stator wire.

                    I just rebuilt a GS500 engine about a month ago, and there are no other internal wires or wire clips in these engines.

                    The big question is -- where is the screw that was holding the wire clip? Is it stuck to the magnets on the rotor? Is the engine running and charging (aside from the oil pan thing)?

                    The clip itself is not all that important -- its function is more to hold the wires in place during assembly. However, I would definitely order up a stator cover gasket and investigate. It's quite possible that, last time the stator cover was off, other screws weren't tightened or didn't receive a dose of thread locking compound.

                      The odds are pretty low -- these like to stick tight, even if you grease them first. Order up another one.

                        Change the o-ring at the oil galley. The round part in the center. If this leaks after install you will lose oil pressure.

                            Mine's a later bike, an 85 GS700 to be specific. Yours may be different.

                            Thanks for the advice I've gotten. Aside from some carb issues the bike was doing fine, even seemed ok providing power for both Buell headlights at the same time.

                            I know the guy I bought the bike from crashed it and broke the stator cover, I guess he didn't put stuff back together quite right. I'll make sure to find the screw that held that before I run the engine again... damn, I'd been hoping to have it going again for next weekend.
