    Removing Primary Sprocket

Well, I finally got the last piece off, at least I hope it's the last. I only had to drill the head off of one phillips head screw. Now I need to figure out how to remove the primary sprocket and the old and very rusty chain (see picture). It looks like the sprocket much come off before the chain can be removed. At this point I cannot follow the manual procedure that suggests applying the rear brake and using an pneumatic impact wrench as I have nothing in the frame except the engine.

Can anyone offer any suggestions for removing the large nut that keeps the sprocket in place? If worse comes to worse, I guess I'll have to put the rear end together before I can install the new parts.

    Thanks,
    rickt

Cut the chain off with a cut off wheel, a grinder, or even a Sawzall. Get a 1/2 inch drive air impact & put the trans in gear & the nut will come right off. Ray.

I had a hell of a time trying to get that nut off (...hehe) My 1/2" air impact couldn't do it, although it's a free one that came with my compressor so I'm guessing it isn't worth much. I ended up having to use a long socket wrench and actually stand on the center stand and pull up with all of my force. (I tried once without standing on the center stand and actually lifted the bike up and almost knocked it over, scared the hell out of me)

When it finally gave I thought I broke the wrench because of how loud the pop was.

With the swingarm off it should come right out. Looks like you might have to take out one engine mount.

I just removed the shaft nut on my 82 gs1100 EZ. Once I bent back the lock tab, the nut was only finger tight!.

That kind of freaked me out. The bike has 20K on it and it looks like it had the original chain and sprockets. With the lock tab, it couldn't have loosened so I guess that means it was never tightened at the factory?

The same goes for the rear sprocket bolts. They were all just finger tight and kept in place with the lock tabs.

I've got a new 530 chain and sprokets from Z1 Enterprises that I'm installing.
