    starter button-killing power 1150

I hit my starter button this morning, heard a click and all power shut off. I replaced all the fuses after this, took the kill switch/ button assembly apart, cleaned contacts checked grounds.

I noticed one of the plastic posts holding the kill button pivot broke off. If I turn the switch on and off the power returns to the cluster, the headlight goes on and it will bump start and run fine.

If I thumb the button again it clicks and all power disappears. I did a search and read through a lot of threads, but wondering if anyone else have some tips. Thanks

I dug through my electrical stash and found another switch assembly. I tried three starter relays to no avail. Cleaned connectors and grounds, nothing. I bought an Interstate gelmat battery last September thinking It would last longer. It ended up being the culprit. Overnight, I trickle charged the battery I replaced with the gelmat which had sat in my garage since September and tryed firing it up the next morning. Fired right up .

When the battery was sitting in your garage since September, was there any kind of a charger/maintainer connected to it? If not, that's why it failed.

Even the better batteries will self-discharge over time. Yes, it's at a slower rate, but it still happens. A Battery Tender or equivalent charger/maintainer connected to the battery will keep it fresh and ready-to-ride at all times. You can get various models of the Battery Tender brand for $40-70 or you can get a Schumacher model at Wal-Mart (or the same thing with a DieHard brand at Sears) for about $30. Make sure it has the words "charger/maintainer" in the device description.

No, the battery in the garage that I used was hooked to nothing. Thats the one that worked. The gelmat $80 battery in the bike was the one that failed. One I use on daily basis throughout the winter. Only lasted 8 months.

              Carter,

Gelmats typically have a one year warranty. You should check for your receipt and call the seller.

                Big T,

One year huh? Seems short. Why did I buy this thing then? Oh yeah, It was to meet up with you guys.

I'm sure the shop will hook me up with a new one.
