Thanks Chef, I didn't know if that would rule them out or not. Looks like I'll have to get an adapter, but easier than getting to the valves.

OK Duaneage gets the gold star for the sticking slides. It turns out when the PO disassembled the carbs in the past, he left out a small stainless bushing on one of the slides. It was actually sitting on top of the carb when I took it off the first time and I tossed it in a can on my workbench thinking it was junk and idly wondering why it was there. Anyway, on careful inspection of my carbs it was clear that something was amiss because the main jet holder on one carb was at least 1/8" higher than the other. It is important to not that the bushing is NOT on the carb diagram in the Kaw manual, so I don't feel so bad. The slide was binding slightly without the bushing. When I replaced the bushing (still had the old one!) and synched the carbs, what a difference! Now it winds out great and rides very nice. Still a little hesitation throughout, but very minor and not enough to worry about for a novice rider. I might tweak the mixture screw at some point, but for now, the wife is riding!

Thanks to all for the help. Now I can work on my GS550 again, finally!
