    Help, max idle of 2k RPM

    82 GS1100 GLz
    Since January, this bike has had a new wiring harness installed to replace the one that melted the main fuse. Along with the wiring harness came a new fuse box, new r/r, both handle bar switches. Had bike working for about a week, before I noticed that this still didn't correct my charging issues so the stator was then replaced along with the battery to a AGM battery from bikebatts.com. Had bike running for about 2 weeks when the starter clutch went. I then had the starter clutch and rotor replaced as the issue was sheared bolts through the clutch into the rotor. I also at one point installed a fuel filter.

    I now have the bike back, but am having issues with the bike running. It started out as an occasional stutter or bog down while riding. It would clear and take off again like nothing happened. Yesterday I ran close to a hundred miles with out any incident after once on start up after sitting for an hour. This morning I rode to work, again no issues in the forty-five minute ride. I went out at lunch and maybe 500 yards out of the parking lot, it started bogging down. I could not get the bike over 2K rpm, if it went over 2K while going down hill, it starts bucking and backfiring. Using the choke(enrichment) circuit makes no difference. I have been running some sea foam though the bike more or less constant since I got this bike in November, that is at least when it would run.

    After limping home I checked for air leaks using carb cleaner, non seemed to be evident. I then pulled the air filter out of the bike, this, too, seemed to make no difference.

    Please any suggestions on where to look would be greatly appreciated.

    Dude! What else could go wrong? Try taking off the fuel filter and see if that helps.

      I know what you mean, I feel like I have just about rebuilt the whole bike, and things still are not running right.

      I will take the fuel filter off, but I am not sure why that will help. The bike seems rich to me, as I can smell fuel in the back fire and exhaust.

        A common problem with fuel filters is that most of the ones you are likely to find at Pep Boys or Autozone or Wal-Mart are for cars and trucks that have fuel pumps that will push the gas through the membrane. Our bikes have no such pump, and rely on gravity to get the fuel to flow.

        There are filters for gravity-fed engines, but you will find them in the lawn mower section. 8-[

          I'm all for losing the fuel filter! I ran with one for many years and miles but when my bike exhibited the same problem, well that eventually turned out to be the problem. At least the final one. At one point I did find a meltdown of loosely connected stator wires. Still, after fixing that and checking all connections and installing new Dyna coils, the occasional and unpredictable dying motor syndrome continued. It hasn't happened in over a year since I tossed the inline filter.
