CHOKE ROD issue

It looks as though when I am opening the choke up, the rail is only sliding a couple mm. If I grab the choke rail bracket (that sticks out on the side of carb 1) I can physically slide it over a nudge or two and the choke really opens up.

The carbs were cleaned this winter and I was careful and thorough about cleaning the choke and assembling. I feel like if I had less cable to pull the choke button up, it would slide the choke rail over properly.

Is there anyway to adjust this? Perhaps from the choke button?

Maybe you installed the choke rod backwards. Did all the screws on the choke actuaters go in the tiny notches on the rod?

yeah, they all lined up right in the notch.

What if I sprayed some WD 40 down the rail?

You can try. If you just had them apart and cleaned them they shouldn't be binding. You should be able to pull the choke out by hand from the carbs fairly easily.

On the number 1 carbs pull on the choke actuater and all the chokes should open. Easily. If it's not smooth and easy I would double check installation.

it does open easily if I pull on the actuator on 1. Well, I mean I have to tug a lil bit. But i wouldn't want it just sliding open too easy either, so it feels right. It's just when I pull the choke up from the button, all the way up, it doesn't slide the actuator ALL the way over as it should. As though there is too much slack in the cable.

any way to adjust from the choke button?

If I remember correctly, you can easily install the springs, or the bracket that captures the end of the choke cable, on the rod in the wrong positions; perhaps that's the issue??

That rod should easily slide back & forth, opening & closing the choke pistons on each carb.

I just rebuilt the carbs on my '82 650G last year, but my memory isn't the best!

I think your issue is with lack of cable pull, not with the choke assembly.

Is there any play in the choke cable before it starts pulling on the choke?

yeah, there is play. Meaning, as I said, the choke button reaches it's highest lift before it pulls over the rail to open the up the choke.

How can this be adjusted?

I think there's probably a way to adjust the cable at one end of it. I don't have a rack of carbs in front of me though... but should be similar to adjusting the throttle cable.

if your choke cable is fully up on the bars and it only opens them a hair on the carbs...

first check the plastic twist ring on the actual choke knob

second check your routing of the choke cable, perhaps it is placed wrong

I used to have to litterally bite my choke knob to hold it up when the bike was starting cold. Since it would close second bike started... did not notice my plastic ring was loose as hell 8-[ *duh*...gave it a couple turns and boom... back in buisness I felt very silly but luckily I found guys who had the same problem and the fix was posted :-D

Your issue does sound like the knob might not be adjusted or the cable routing is incorrect.

Check both ends of the cable. Where it connects to the actuating rod on the carbs and make sure it is connected properly. Also check that it is connected correctly at the thumb lever on the handlebar.

Hopefully It is just the plunger screw thing. Everytime I have ever taken that off, I'm confused about the proper way it's goes back on, how to adjust it, etc. Just feels awkward screwing it in, like I'm twisting the cable wrong.

I have an 81 so the choke plunger sits at the bottom between the handlebars. I'll doouble check the bottom connection, but I already checked that. Never hurts to check again. Looked okay though

This. I was working with my choke cable a few nights ago and wondered what the correct method was for putting it back in and adjusting the plastic ring.
