    timing chain

How far can a timming chain stretch. finally got bike to idle decent and it will slowly accelerate but if you punch it you loose all your vacumm as if the valves are still open and its goin right out the exhaust. I know the timming chai is stretched becouse i can hear it just starting to start slapping. I was just wandering just how far it could stretch and how much it affects how it runs?????

Even a badly stretched chain won't effect the bike like that. The chain's path from the crank to the cams is always tight. The tensioner takes up the slack on the downwards (inoperative) side. But it might be a good idea to check the operation of the tensioner.

I would check your carbs. It sounds like you have something wrong with the mid-range. You don't say what bike you have but it sounds like its an early model with the VM carbs, not the later CV carbs.

If its the CV carbs you might have a leaky diaphragm or two. Have a mechanic check them out before you get too distracted by the cam chain. It will have to get very noisy before it becomes a problem.

Depending on what bike you have, there is a limit specified in the manual.

my manual specifies a measurement for a certain number of links, but it's not easy to get an accurate measurement while the chain is on the bike. I takes two people, or one person with four hands, or someone with two hands and opposable toes. :-)

On the 1100 and the 1150 it is fairly easy to measure the camchain even if the engine is still mounted on the bike.

Sounds like the tensioner to me, as before replace the automatic with a manual.........$40 well invested.

Karl, what is the measurement between the 20 links?
