Valve clearances?

Today I managed to spend some time on the bike. A GS1000ET
So I decided to check the valve clearances.
I found that all of my clearances were between just 0.07mm and 0.1mm.
All of the gaps were about the same.
I checked the manual to make sure I was doing it right.
Same results.
My question is should I get new shims to bring them into spec or should I just let them tighten up with use?

I dont know the history of the bike. Other than the fact the PO got work done at the bike shop. So I dont know when this was last checked (or how well)

DUDE!!! they are already too tight, why would you want to wait for them to get tighter? :shock:

Specs call for .03 to .08 mm and you say that all of yours are .01 or less. If you go one size down, they will go to .06 mm, which is very happy territory. 8-[

You already have a copy of my spreadsheet, did it not suggest different-size shims?


OK you edited out your zeroes, I am going to have to change my post, too.

The specified upper limit is 0.8 mm and you are right in that neighborhood. I have been known to run them at .09 because I would rather have them a bit looser than tighter. I don't know if the .1 might be getting too loose, but it should be OK.

The spreadsheet should still suggest a new shim, but if you simply enter the value you are keeping in there, you will still know what's in there next time you adjust the valves.

Running up to 0.1 (despite the book saying .08) is fine so you're ok. Don't be tempted to push it wider though, especially if you like revving your motor as you increase the chance of spitting a shim.
