How to remove scratches from windshields?
I was wondering if anybody has any suggestions on how to get scratches out of windshields or face shields on helmets?
I know that you guys are very knowledgeable on many topics.

Meguiar's makes a product called PlastX that I've used to polish up headlight lenses with. It won't remove deep stuff, but fine scratches should polish out nicely with it.

Did you ever get your bike running Mel? Sorry I haven't kept up, on the road alot without my laptop.

I've never tried it but worked with a guy that used furniture polish on his and sait it worked great. Just thought i'd throw that out there.

The Plastix is good stuff but you can get fine scratches out with polishing compound or even toothpaste. Baking soda mixed into a paste with cooking oil works as well. Just about any fine abrasive paste will work. Deep scratches or gouges are tougher and to my knowledge there is nothing much that can be done

Turtle wax paste or liquid wax, the green stuff, works for me.

Be careful trying to remove scratches. Many quality windshields have a scratch-resistant coating on them. Obviously the scratch has already penetrated that layer, but trying to polish out the scratch will compromise more of the coating around the scratch, leading to more problems. You might be better off replacing the windshield, then caring for it properly.

To properly clean a windshield:
Use a wet rag (I use micro-fibers) to lay over the dirty windshield to let it soak for a minute or two. When everything is wet, it comes off easier. Wipe lightly ONLY with VERTICAL strokes. Since virtually all of the lights that might reflect off of scratches are above the horizon, when they hit a vertical scratch, they will be deflected down. If you have horizontal, or worse yet, circular scratches, there is a good chance that it will be deflected into your eyes, causing problems.

NEVER use Rain-X, Windex or any other products with alcohol or ammonia on a windshield that has a scratch-resistant coating. The chemicals attack the coating and it will haze over and flake off. Wash off with water, use a mild soap if you wish.

For protection there are products made for plastic windshields. Novus Plastics has a couple of polishes and a final coating. Plexus comes in a spray can, available at most bike shops. My personal favorite is 210 spray polish by Sumner Laboratories. When my supply of that runs out, I use the same Meguiar's Liquid Cleaner Wax that I use on the rest of the bike. Actually, just about any good wax should work, just remember to only use vertical strokes as much as possible.
