    82 GS850L woes.....Help meeee.....Please

I have a few problems with my beloved GS850L (I know what your thinking, 850L? Yes 850L, at least thats what my side covers say. Everywhere I look for info on this bike, there is no 850L. The closest I get is an 850GL. Same thing maybe?). I was wondering if some of the more experienced owners of this model could assist in answering some questions?

The first problem I am having with my bike is that one day my blinkers worked just fine, then all of a sudden, while I was riding the bike my front blinkers stopped working. They dont come on at all. The rear blinkers come on but do not blink. I have taken apart the headlight and checked the wiring in there as well as the ground wires to the front blinkers and everything looks good to me. Any ideas as to the problem here?

The next problem I am having is finding out what the factory settings are for the jets on all four carb's. The shop told me I can get that information from a "Service Manual" but not an "Owners Manual". Of course, he just couldn't tell me, instead he just told me the manual runs $40.00-$80.00. Is there anyone out there with one of these manuals who could tell me? are they 1 1/2 turns out or 2 3/4 turns out or what?

I think the jet settings are my problem with it running just a tad rough (i.e. not being able to shut choke off all the way (just about though) as well as stalling just a sec. before taking off when I really get on the gas. It also backfires a little bit when I let off the gas (i.e. brup, brup, brup not boom, boom, boom). Hope my sound effects help, LOL.

I am also having battery staying charged problems, but I will get into that later. Well not really charging problems, more like not staying charged after parked for day problem, but like I said, I'll deal with that later. I just want to focus on the other problems above for now.

Sorry for the novel and thanks for any info you send my way.

P.S. I should probably mention that the bike was stored for 5 years when I got it 4 years ago. When I got it I had to take apart all the carb's, clean them, put them back in. Oil change after using Slick50 engine flush. New valve cover gasket and air filter. New battery every year (as it goes bad during winter even with trickle charger on it) and new front fork seals.

On my 1980 GS850G the air screws are set at 1 1/2 turns out from bottom. Your bike is a GS850GL. Hope this helps.

I had some problems with the blinkers on my '80 1000GL. By sheer luck I discovered that if I jiggled the wiring harnesses under the left side cover, the blinkers would work fine. Check the connections there if you haven't already.

make sure your wires from the blinker are hooked up correctly (you will need the the color of the wire from someone who has the schemetic or one that has working blinkers. If they are not hooked up correctly they will come on but not blink. Check the connection to the flasher unit and maybe replace the flasher unit,it should be near the battery under a side panel I think. (could be different on your bike) I would buy the manual its the best $80 you can spend

This wiring being hooked up wrong would not be the problem, unless gremlins switched the wires on me while riding it. They were working while riding at one turn, then the next trun they quit working (the front ones). The fronts do not light up but the rears do, none flash.

If a flasher goes bad, would it cause just the front flashers to not light up? I thought if a flasher died, they would just come on but not flash, not keep the lights from even comming on. As far as the book goes, I will more than likely get it once I find another job and have money.

It's been four years sense I did the carbs on my bike and I can't remember where I set them (I just counted the number of turns when I did it), so I would rather wait til I get the factory setting for my paticular bike. If nobody responds, then I'll try your settings at 1 1/2 turns. Thanks for responding though.

Sounds exactly like the problem I was having... Lights were working fine, then I removed the rear lights to mount on the frame. After that, sometimes one light would come on, but not blink. Other times, nothing would come on.

I checked the lights and connections I had removed, because it seemed to me I had heard somewhere that the lights themselves are an integral part of the "blinking" action -- no blinking on the front could just mean a burned out light in the rear. Everything was fine.

Thought I'd check further "upstream", so I removed the side panel and started picking through the wiring there, with the blinkers on so I could check for current or something. When I jiggled the wires, the blinkers started working, then stopped working again, then started.

Since I'm waiting a couple of weeks for parts anyway, I haven't bothered to look for the problem in more detail yet, but it's probably just a dirty connector or failing wire -- a multimeter should tell me what's up.

If the problem occured out of nowhere, and all the bulbs/fuses are okay, I'd check the condition of the wiring before replacing anything.

In response to the model designation, the 'G' simply means it's a shaft drive, it's a hidden model letter. So your bike is really a 850GL.

How strong is your battery when your blinkers stop working? Mine would stop when the battery was getting weak due to not recharging. I added an extra ground from the battery to the metal elctronics mounting plate, I think I used a solenoid bolt, and that cured everything. My battery loses no voltage now after a ride.

                    Good Luck,
                    Dave

I don't think that's the problem. Once I put a charge on the battery I can drive it all day and it starts just fine all day, it's just when it sits in the garage overnight the battery looses just enough juice that the bike will turn over, but not enough juice to give a good enough spark to start it. As soon as I throw jumpers on it (I don't even need to start the car) it fires right up.

I have a multimeter that reads in volts and ohms only. I used it to test between both the positive and negative leads to the battery and both are drawing .03 volts. I'm not sure if this means I have a drain or not. Should it be reading anything at all when the bike is not on?

Regarding the manual, it is a service manual you want. Look on e-bay. There are a boatload of them on there.

Blinker not working and Battery Draining

Well, I'm gonna keep this short and sweet, cuz I was writing a big long huge stupid-ass'd reply while here @ work, and didn't get to post it before my session timed out, so anyways :x

I had problems with my left turn signal not working too good...
With the left turn signal switched on, it would NOT flash, and would NOT be on at all. I replaced the light, same thing. I took the light out, used a somewhat fine sand paper, and removed the corrosion, and that fixed it up fine.

I would think perhaps, that if you have a bad ground somewhere, perhaps through a corroded signal light socket, that may be causing the battery to lose charge when sitting there... just a hunch
