    2 questions about my 1982 GS850G

Hey guys - thanks in advance for all your knowledge. I have two questions.

    1. The center console indicates I have 6 gears. When commuting to work, I'm at about 50 mph in 5th gear and it feels like I'm ready for 6th. I cannot get it to shift into 6th (if it indeed exists) nor can I, when standing still, run the gears up to 6. Does 6th gear not exist, or am I looking at a busted transmission portion?

    2. The engine runs unevenly. There is some up and down to the revs of the engine, both standing still and while riding. Nothing serious, just a few jolts here and there. I *think* it has something to do with the Kerker 4-1 that's on the bike, despite the carbs never having been rejetted for that exhaust. If I were to put a 4-2 on it, might that remedy the situation?

    Thanks!

The 850 has a 5 speed transmission. Gear indicator display must be shared with other model bikes to save money.

Jetting is lean on all the GS bikes and anything that is done to increase airflow, like adding a header or pod air filters, leans the mixture even more - the pods are worse in this respect.

A dynojet stage 1 kit will help the jetting needs, or install a stock exhaust. An aftermarket 4 into 2, with free flowing mufflers, won't make much difference from where you are right now.

Hope this helps and good luck.

dynojet stage 1, and a stock exhaust. Check boss.

Thanks for letting me know I'm not in a world of hurt with a broken gear!

Ah! OK. Yeah, I would rather go stock and get this ugly rusted 4-1 off me. Sweet. I appreciate it.

            OK one more question:

Could I get a lighter clutch pull by replacing the clutch cable?

            Something like this: http://www.oldbikebarn.com/Motorcycl...lutch-Cable_27

or will that do nothing? What can I do to get an easier clutch pull?

New cables can make a world of difference IF your current cables are worn. Go for it if the cables are more than 15k miles old or so.

                    Vendor talk

                    Hi Mr. Jimmy Hoffa,

Personally, I don't know the vendor of which you speak. Z1 Enterprises and Bike Bandit are my most often used online vendors. I've also ordered from a few others like FlatoutMotorcycles and Cycle-Recycle2. The mega-welcome page has a list with most of "our favorite" vendors that I've been collecting. When you find a new vendor you like and can recommend, I'll be happy to add it to the list I'm compiling.

                    Thank you for your indulgence,

                    BassCliff

Well, having combed the web for a stock 4-2 for an 82 GS 850G, that site is the only one i've found that has them.

I've checked out those other sites you recommended, and they have plenty of good stuff, but exhausts seem pretty hard to come by!

Yep, and the aftermarket stuff can be pricey, $300 or more for a V/H or MAC 4in1. Keep checking on ebay and craigslist. Maybe you'll get lucky and find a bike being parted out. Good luck.

EDIT: I just took a look at alphaheaven.com. They want $175 for a used w/minor damage stock exhaust? Hmmm, I'd call them on the phone and maybe ask for a picture, try and find out about the "minor damage". It could be a good thing. Are there any other bike wreckers in your area?

                        Thank you for your indulgence,

Now if you were in Aus ,I could highly recommend Transac for a set of 4 into 2's.I got a set made and they are spot on.Kept my side and centre stands and they both clear the pipes. They are tucked in real close to the frame,so much so that my engine cases are the first things to scrape.Only hassle is that now I think I should look into some engine bars.Or,don't crash.Cheers,Simon.\\/

Just called the guy, he seems pretty reasonable. Charges not an arm and a leg for shipping. He doesn't have pics, but he assures me that it's just minor scrapes, no rust or pitting. Nothing that couldn't be cleaned up he says. I may take a chance on this with my next paycheck...

Most of the 850 riders would like to have a 6th gear, but it only has 5. I would not buy a used exhaust without pictures regardless of what he says. Pictures don't lie !!!!
