    ignition advance question

just got my 80 450l starting and running with amazing reliability considering it was sitting for several years. I took it for a ride and at about 3000-5000 rpms it looses power (only in gear) then sputters and regains power. I found this thread very helpful, but it kinda went in a different direction. I was thinking its either ignition advance or intermittent spark. so what do I check and how? this is my first gs so everything is new to me. my manual is already ordered and should be here any day, so the noob questions from me should ease up8-[.

besides that, what should the plugs be gapped at?

ps, can anyone send me a wiring diagram? Basscliffs site didn't have it

What makes you sure the problem is the ignition? Carb problems are far more common, particularly on an old GS. Replace the o-rings, including the intake boot O-rings if you have not already done so.

just because its only happening during riding. I cleaned the carbs up but did not change anything yet. Planning on a carb rebuild next month. where can I get some technical drawings online?

        Hi,

The Suzuki manual you ordered should explain the troubleshooting
guideline in their t/s section. It could be the carbs or the ignition
        advance as you described.

As for the advance, just pop the right cover off and see if the plate moves when you give it the gas. That's all there is for the mechanical advance !! You'll see the timing marks advance with a timing light
        pointed at the advance plate.

All the Mikuni CV carbs are similar; check the GSR homepage and look up the carb rebuild series in the Garage section. O-rings are available from Robert Barr at cycleorings.com You NEED to replace the intake boot O-rings; if they are not leaking now, they will be very soon.

          Good luck.

so I have a "CV", I'll order the o rings and intake boot rings. also notice that the left side exhaust is cooler for longer than the right side. anything else I should do besides the o-rings?
