I ordered the o-ring kit, intake o-rings and stainless bolts for the intake off of this forum today. I'm gonna rebuild them anyway since they're off and half apart already. I don't know how I could get a punch in that tiny little hole to knock the rest of the fuel screw out but I will try anything to get this done and resolved. These carbs seem in excellent condition otherwise. I was thinking of maybe holding it upright and lightly rapping it with a hammer and crossing my fingers that it falls out and hopefully the bore for it isn't shot. somebody had to have overtightened it until it snapped and just left it like that.Lucky me.

Maybe try tapping it after it's torn apart with a rubber mallet instead of a hammer if you're worried about damage.

curse words!
Woke up early today and went straight to the garage to try to get this screw tip out of the carb. No luck, I wailed on it with a rubber hammer for an hour. I even tried sticking a safety pin in the hole to push it out backwards. The piece is wedged in there and theres no way to really get at it. This sucks, all I want to do is ride the thing and it fights me every step. I found a new screw but the carb body is junk unless I can get that piece out. I don't know where to get a carb body from, Ive looked all over and no one seems to sell just the body. Is it possible to mix and match? What are my chances of finding a matching used carb? I somehow think I'm gonna have to get a whole set of carbs just to get one. Thats not in the budget. Curse words!
I found out why the 78 has cv carbs on it. I looked at the title this morning and written on the bottom of it was: 85 motor. What are my chances of getting the cv carbs to work on the 79 motor? What would I need to do to make them compatible? If I cant find an affordable vm carb solution I may need to do this. I know I'm just frustrated but at this rate it looks like I wont get to ride this summer and I'm starting to get bummed. Heres a pic of the broken screw next to a good one so you can see how much is left in the carb.

Found this using the search function... http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...ad.php?t=82559
Take care so you don't open up the hole too much when punching the tip back through.Ed

Fingers are crossed!!
Thanks so much Nessism! I tried the search but probably entered the wrong name of the part. Thats exactly whats wrong with mine except the tip of the screw is about 1/32" into the hole, there is nothing protruding from the passage but I will try anyway and hope not to mangle the hole too bad.I'm going to go try that right now. I will post my experience, hopefully it will be as successful as gentleman who started that thread. Again thank you as I appreciate your interest and advice![-o<

Success!! Took less than 10 minutes too! I ended up cutting the tip off of an extra test light I had and used that to punch the piece out. Worked like a charm and only roughed the surface of the hole slightly but I'm sure I can make up for that with the fact that I can now adjust that carb. Now I just need to order the screw and when my o-rings get here and put this thing back together. Looks like I might be riding this summer after all. This forum is an absolute necessity, I can't imagine trying to do this restoration without the info and support available here. I would have tried to find another carb because of a piece of brass smaller than a mouse turd. Thanks again Nessism for looking into that, greatly appreciated.

Just keep plugging away and keep posting up as you go
To answer 2 of your lesser questions
1. Very little differences between a 78 and 79 mechanically, I think only the choke actuation is different
2. Check on the BassCliff megawelcome for how to post big pictures, 10 minutes to set it up and you're good to go
BTW, how far north are you??1978 GS 1000 (since new)
1979 GS 1000 (The Fridge, superbike replica project)
1978 GS 1000 (parts)
1981 GS 850 (anyone want a project?)
1981 GPZ 550 (backroad screamer)
1970 450 Mk IIID (THUMP!)
2007 DRz 400S
1999 ATK 490ES

Big T, the reason I was asking about the difference between the two bikes is the carbs were different. I recently found out why: because the 78 has an 85 motor on it(or so someone scribbled on the title but it makes sense).
I will post some pics of the bikes soon. Right now I'd rather get some work done.
I'm on the North side of Chicago maybe a 10 minute walk from Wrigley Field.
I will post any and all progress, I'm hooked! In the past I've built many lifted/lowered trucks (currently working on two) or muscle cars. This is my first attempt at reviving an old bike and I love it. Plus they fit in the garage even with 2 trucks, can't beat it! Especially with gas approaching 5 bucks a gallon, I may just abandon the trucks and go 2 wheels all the way.....naw I love my trucks too.

still need pilot screw
Okay, I thought i had found a place selling the screw I need but it turns out it was for the cv carbs. I tried the kink on the thread pertaining to removing these screws but it was not valid and a google search turned up nothing useful. I also tried the links in the mega greeting and didnt find anyone selling the screws for the vm carbs.Maybe I'm just missing it but if anyone knows where to get these please let me know. This (at the moment) is the only thing keeping my bike off the road and would like to change that ASAP. Thanks in advance.

As mentioned earlier in the thread...you can get a fuel screw in the 750 rebuild kit Z1 sells - screw is the same as your 550's fuel screw. http://www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=487Ed

Is the 750 pilot screw the same as the 1000? My bike is a gs1000 not a 550. Sorry to make you repeat stuff but I'm on a budget right now and just want to be sure before I order anything. Thanks again.

no luck so far
I am still trying to find the pilot fuel screws. I've gone to local cycle shops with no luck. Nessism, that kit apparently wont work for the 1000 I'm told, but I have submitted a parts request to z1 enterprises, thanks for the link. Hopefully they can help me. I've looked online on e bay and other links from this site and have not found any available. The link that was posted with the thread that showed how to remove the broken screws does not work anymore either. I'm getting desperate here. I'm meeting someone I was recommended to tomorrow to see if he can help me find them. I've got my fingers crossed. Otherwise I may need to pay a ridiculous amount of money (which I cannot afford) to buy 4 junk carbs off e bay just for a little screw. yuk! But its seems its that or no ridee. In other news, everything else on the bike is coming together quite well. I am painting the tank, tail light cover, and side covers this weekend a cool color shifting blue and purple and painting the mags satin black (the original finish is oxidized or I would leave them). As always, any recommendations are always welcome! Thanks for looking. R.B.

Both the 750 and 1000 use VM26SS carbs according to the service manual. Very strange that they use different fuel screws. Do you have a photo of your fuel screws? Maybe take one with a ruler next to it. I'll compare to some screws I have here.Ed

Nessism, you were right all along! I was getting so many opinions I just confused myself. After calling, emailing, searching and begging I was able to piece together the fact that all vm carbs on gs suzuki's use the same friggin fuel screw and the only place to get them is in the rebuild kit for the 750, just like it was posted way earlier in this thread. geeze thats what I get for over complicating it. Anyway lesson learned it was ordered today. Soon it will breathe again!

Got the new screw yesterday! I felt excited like a little kid in front of a christmas tree. I got the new o ring kit for the intake and the carbs about a week ago so I'm ready to get this thing together! I'll be in the garage if anybody needs me.
