Final Drive - has anybody taken it appart?

i'm contemplating having the final drive case powdercoated

there are some oil seals in the assembly that i'm not sure would withstand the oven baking temperature (230 deg C)
what do you think?

has anybody taken the final drive appart, how hard/simple is it?
the parts-fiche shows a lot of parts but i would imagine some of them would come out as a set (like the secondary gears do), no?

(i took my engine to bits and put together without major probs, so that's my reference in terms of skills and tools)

Did you look in the service manual on rear end rebuilding? Takes a TON of different special service tools. Not good.

Why not just paint the darn thing with liquid paint? Polished a unit off a 1100 and hit it with urethane clear - should be plenty durable.

suzuki sometimes calls for "special tools" that one can do without, that's why i'm asking if anyone's done it
looking at the manual it looks complicated but they show the disassembly of the gear units which i wouldnt have to do
i'm concerned about the special oil-seal pullers and installers they talk about though

the haynes manual is cool on the topic - they just skip it :shock:

have a really bad experience clear-coating polished alu - corodes underneath the clear-coat :shock: but that's another story

looking at powdercoating to get a uniform finish with some other parts

I tried to strip mine down off my GS650 and ruined 2 bearings which are only available from Suzuki (and expensive).
I ended up buying a low mileage 2nd hand unit and getting the color matched at a local paint manufacturer. Its not exactly the same as the swing arm but no one notices.

Hi, thanks for nice comments about the bike. Most cycle parts have been powder coated on it (except the bevel box)

Here's a photo of the rebuild showing the swing arm and bevel box. Swing Arm was powder coated and the bevel box was sprayed by myself.

Oh its SIMPLE to take apart man!!















You'll never get it backtogether without an arm load of special gizmos and whozits tho. If you want to give it a shot, Id say buy a spare one of ebay ( i get em on the cheap all the time) and try it on that.... But frankly, its not worth it. Pull it, buff the chit out of it, and put it back on. Hit it with some Mothers every now and then and call it good.
