    Wrecked stator and R/R - GS300l

    Hey all,

    I was having probs with my charging system so I went to the stator papers. Turned out the stator was bad as the voltage was wrong on all 3 outputs. Bought a new one, put it on and voila!! Charging at 13.5v perfect!!!. on the test ride I had a volt meter connected to it while I was riding to make sure it was ok. 5 mins into the ride it stopped charging and slowly went down in volts till I got home. Had a look and one of the leads was burnt on the new R/R and stuff had leaked out of it, so it was obviously fried. Put the old R/R back on and voila!!! Charging good after about an hour ride she was back up to 13.5v while riding. THEN it stopped charging and slowly went back down again!!!! When I got back I tested the brand new stator and 2 of the leads are not putting anything out at all so obviously its fried too.
    Does anyone have the slightest clue what would be frying this stuff. BTW Brand new expensive battery so thats not the prob either.

    You wouldn't happen to have a six volt bike would you?
    If not you have a short somewhere.

      Nope its a 12volt. I was wondering more along the lines if there was a common cause of this problem(more specific). I'm guessing something like a short also and I'm looking for advice on possible issues that would affect the stator and the R/R. Thanx for the reply though.

        Curious if your bike has the old setup where a lead from the stator goes to your headlight, may wanna look there for excessive current draw/short if that's the case. Or perhaps even check your R/R for a short.

          The charging circuit is very simple. Next time around I suggest you just wire the system direct - stator wires feeding direct into the R/R - output wires feeding direct into the battery. Nothing can go wrong that way.

                If the R/R is still good after I check it, I will go and get another stator. I will wire the stator directly to the R/R and the R/R to the battery. Then there should be no shorts.

                Questions with this......Are the old wires ok to stay on the bike? They shouldn't get any back feeds from anywhere eh?

                Also....is it possible that my engine is getting too hot and frying the stator cause it does get oil on it.

                    No worry on the heat.

                    Check your wiring diagram. Most likely you are fine with just taping up the wires. There is a positive feed into the main harness from the stator on many GS bikes but the same harness feed goes straight to the battery as well. If you go direct to the battery use a fuse in line.

                      cool thanx. I just didn't want to buy another stator and fry it because it wasn't a short but the heat. I'm guessing a short too. It just makes sense and the last stator had problems too. I am at a crossroads with this bike as I'm leaving for Afghanistan for 7 months in Sep. When I get back I'm buying a new Boulevard S50. I just can't sell the bike with these problems and sleep at night. Or I may keep it and then I would really have to fix it anyway. It was my first bike and I love it too much to leave it broken I guess.

                          That is what I did on mine.

                          Put a R/R on it from a 2000 something GSXR750... not a mine of trouble since.

                              Yes, I'm a Plumbing and Heating Technician in the Canadian Military. I do like that little bike, just gives me some major headaches from time to time. I think I want to keep it for a starter bike for my wife. I'm definitely getting a new bike upon my return from Afghanistan though.
